This practice works just fine if all vegetables are fully cooked before consumption. The problem is some Korean meals involve the use of raw lettuce to make wraps. Washing alone doesn’t kill the parasites.

I think N. Koreans eat vegetables anyway they can. I suspect, due to shortage of cooking fuel/coal/firewood, they have no choice but to eat raw veggies even if they don't want to.
