Got it - thank God for the internet...That Greg Jarrett is a pretty sharp guy - still water runs deep. He doesn’t stand out as a great commentator or journalist or whatever but he’s very much on the ball. I only learned a year or so ago that he’s an attorney which isn’t meant as a PLUS!

I was in Monterey in 1984.
I was stationed at the Presidio, taking a year-long Russian language course for the good ole US Army. One of the most fun Army postings I ever had!
But I didn’t know anything about Panetta then. I was too busy drinking Stoli from the freezer and learning how to say Hello in Russian.

But, speaking of vodka. A neighbor I knew had a couple of remodeled rooms where he made some money housing foreign students. One was Russian. I think he was there for about a semester (maybe 2) at Monterey Peninsula College. When he was about to go home he had a BBQ for him and as it wound down there were 5 or 6 of us sitting around the fire and the Russian kid said he had a surprise.
He ran to the house and came back with a back pack that held 6 bottles of vodka. They were not 750ml but they were bigger than champagne splits. He sat down by the fire and said, "Now we drink".
He handed each of us a bottle and as he did he twisted the top off and threw it in the fire!
That's all I remember of the evening, but I saved the Russian language bottle for a long time. I wish I had kept it now, just for a conversation piece.
Panetta has been all over the political map and his past associations with hardcore leftists (one of whom he especially admired as a friend and mentor, Hugh DeLacey, former Democrat Rep. from California in the old days), makes it very hard to understand where Leon’s ideology lays.
Hopefully in his older days, as he got to see “real” intelligence on our enemies, he changed a bit. He’d make a very interesting witness in any hearing/probe of the sad state of American intelligence organizations and accuracy of their information.
And when is this thing supposed to happen?......
