Could the NFL really send the Chargers back to San Diego? It's something being discussed, according to longtime NFL reporter Don Banks.
The former Sports Illustrated reporter, who has worked for NFL Media and currently writes for The Athletic, told a San Diego radio station on Thursday the NFL never wanted to lose San Diego as a market and could force Chargers owner Dean Spanos to take the team back.
"I have been painted a picture from people Ive talked to that the league was sympathetic to Dean Spanos plight," Banks told The Mighty 1090. "Feels like he had been a league guy feels like he had waited kind of his turn on the relocation front, thought he had the votes the year before Jerry Jones and Stan Kroenke pretty much outmaneuvered Dean and Mark Davis with the Raiders to be the first in line for LA. So it was almost as if this was a bit of a make up.
"There are people in the league including the commissioner they did not want to see San Diego forsaken. They would rather there be a team in San Diego. If theres anything viable that they could find to put the league back in to San Diego, I think they will be in that camp strongly."
The Chargers failed to sell out their temporary home, the 27,000-seat StubHub Center, in their home opener last Sunday. Banks wrote at The Athletic the NFL is shocked by how quickly things have gone south for the Chargers in L.A.

Last night’s game was pretty good towards the end. Neither team having a defense against two sputtering offense was Pop Warner football for grownups.
They are dangerous in enclosed spaces...............
Note to NFL: When a former life-long Giants fan won't even pay $0 to see a game, you know you've fouled something up.
NFL teams in California should consider using Pesos for ticket transactions. That might help the California population attend games.
It’s sad to see. I’ve been a Cowboys fan for the last fifty years while being fond of the Giants, too. The cognitive dissonance takes some compartmentalizing. LOL
California likes pro football. That’s why they have the USC Trojans.
It’s like the Chargers are the red headed step children of the NFL.
Right on!
“How about they ship anyone disrespecting America out of the league?”
Better ratings if they allow team beatings on the sidelines.
because you know with the rich people...they do nothing unless there is an angle...
not sure what the angle is, but you can believe they'll all come out smelling like roses.
LOL!..................
There's the problem--having a stadium that seats 30 million in a state which has only 40 million people. No wonder they have trouble filling it.
If I was told to give up the NBA,
I’d say, “Okay. But what’s the bad news?”
At this point why don’t they just build 50,000 seat stadiums on wheels?
I would agree it was their beginning...but the Chargers as a recognized brand and the AFL both developed together over the next few years as the AFL got better and reached parity, and all that happened with the Chargers in San DIego, which is where their roots are. It’s why everyone can’t stop calling them San Diego. It’s impossible to separate them. If Spanos wanted to move to LA, he should have changed the name.
Did you go to any games in 1960?
Actually, the NFL breaks down into three conferences.
The AFC, the NFC, and the SEC.
Why doesn’t the NFL just cut it out, and proceed with what their REAL agenda has been all this time?????
Time for the NFL to become a political musical.
