Melrose Park police sent an appalling message over Labor Day weekend when they auctioned off an AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle to raise money for their police union.
EDITORIAL
They apparently did not care that Melrose Park, the very town they have sworn to serve and protect, bans possession of AR-15s semiautomatic rifles that can load magazines with multiple bullets. ADVERTISING
The village bans the gun for good reason. Nobody need such a powerful weapon to protect themselves their homes or to hunt. And the guns can be exceptionally dangerous when they fall into the wrong hands. But, as Robert Herguth reported in Sundays Sun-Times, the police raffled off an AR-15-style rifle along with a 9mm handgun.

They were likely sending the MSG. that your gun band is a stupid idea.
How much ignorance can you fit into one story?
“semiautomatic rifles that can load magazines with multiple bullets”
The horror...
I could not even read this whole thing. It is obvious from the beginning that the author is gun ignorant and gun stupid but has been fed the anti-gun political propaganda by the anti gun anti constitution folks on the left.
The author of this garbage needs to take the time to actually know what the hell they are talking about. He is speaking about guns the way a person who has never even touched one does. He/she is quite obviously gun stupid.
I was kinda lookin’ for a raffle where they were offering up the NON-dangerous type of AR. Guess I’ll keep lookin’. ;-)
Drink!
Does anyone want a non-dangerous weapon?
I know I don’t.
...Nobody need such a powerful weapon to protect themselves their homes or to hunt...
However, there have been several instances where a single person with one of these dreaded and evil firearms successfully fought off multiple armed home invaders by killing, wounding them, or running them off..
Actually, there's growing support that the AR-15 is ideal for home defense. It's light, easy to use, and research demonstrates the .223 round presents less of an overpenetration risk than more conventional handgun and shotgun options.
—yep—and the S-T never ceases to amaze me—when they need a filler piece it can border on the hysterical—
—better than the S-T garbage—
What about the hunting aspect? Most pro hunters I know love the .223 for making 800 yard shots. Of course that only applies when using the ultra super max high power .223 elephant rounds. Fidiots. ;-)
I use the .223 elephant rounds for rhino...
For elephants, I prefer the .17 Bee....
It's a Bill of RIGHTS, not a Bill of NEEDS.
The author of this editorial is a fool. A very foolish fool. Wisdom is lacking in this one.
Uhhhh, this type of ignorance is hard take. Other than a .22 rifle used to shoot squirrels, an AR-15 is LESS powerful than just about any hunting rifle on the market.
And here I've been loading my own magazines. I need that AR that will load its own magazines.
Will it shoot through a school?
