Cats rescued from La Vita Bella nursing home at center of viral Hurricane Harvey photo

The seven cats living at the flooded Dickinson nursing home that sparked a viral image over the weekend are now dry and happily rescued, just like their owners.

"They're all safe and sound," said Timothy McIntosh, whose mother-in-law owns the waterlogged La Vita Bella facility.

On Sunday, as rains pounded the small Galveston County town, the low-lying facility that was home to 15 elderly patients battling dementia flooded, leaving the residents inundated.

A picture of the patients - and one of their cats - sitting in shoulder-deep water started making rounds on the Twitter after owner Trudy Lampson sent it to her daughter and son-in-law in Florida.

Though the patients and staff were rescued Sunday, some by airlift and some by Army National Guard trucks, Lampson was still worried about the feline friends she wasn't able to save.

"I need to go back," Lampson said shortly just after stepping off a truck at a Santa Fe elementary school. "We have like seven cats."

The internet shared Lampson's concerns, it turned out. The original viral image McIntosh tweeted include a shot of one of the cats, named Bozo - and the Twitterverse was worried about his fate.

"Forty percent of the retweets I got on the picture were asking about the cat," McIntosh said.

Lampson didn't make it back to save the kitties - but her son did, according to McIntosh. And now, seven purring little pets are out of the floodwaters.

Whew, Bozo has had a rough time of it. He needs a can of tuna.

Of course they're concerned about their cats. When we have a tornado warning, I take our cats along to the basement.

The Cats were not owned. They had Human Parents, that were supposed, to care for them.

Kitty is fat and tired after all that trauma.

That’s awesome news the elderly really care about their cats and dogs some won’t even leave when they are told to evacuate because they can’t take their cats and dogs and they’ll stay and die with them. that’s why it’s important even though it seems kind of frivolous but it’s really important to make sure there are plenty of shelters willing to take them, and the SPCA in Houston make it known that they’re going to take animals temporarily, because a lot of people especially elderly will not leave their animals behind...that’s all they have in life, as far as companionship.

Same with the elderly in the nursing home. They say animals keep them alert and help patients with dementia and other illnesses so I’m really happy their cats were saved.

The ultimate winners are the individuals who took the time and effort to rescue God’s creatures who were given to us to comfort us..............There is some good in humanity after all.

A few more pounds and Bozo could be a Holstein. The colors are right.
