At Tuesday's combative press conference in Trump Tower, President Donald Trump questioned the removal of statues of Confederate leaders, but at the start of his presidential campaign, Trump publicly expressed his approval of South Carolina's decision to remove the Confederate battle flag from the State Capitol.
I would take it down, yes, said Trump in June 2015 at his first news conference following the declaration of his presidential candidacy. I think they should put it in a museum and respect whatever it is you have to respect.
The long-running debate over whether the Confederate flag should be flown over the South Carolina State House arose again after nine people were fatally shot in the historically black Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, in a racially charged killing.
Then-South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who is now serving in Trumps Cabinet as the United States ambassador to the United Nations, ultimately decided to order the removal of the flag on July 9, 2015.
Trump argued Tuesday that taking down the statue of Robert E. Lee, a civil war general who fought to keep slavery intact, would be changing history. A protest of the monument's removal spurred the white nationalist rally that ultimately turned violent Saturday.
Youre changing culture, Trump said during the news conference at Trump Tower Tuesday.
Asked whether statues of Lee should remain in place in the U.S., the president said the situation was one that should be handled on a case-by-case basis, depending on the location of the monument.
"I would say that's up to a local town, community, or the federal government, depending on where it is located," he said.

Would it ever be possible for anyone on the Left to recognize that the Confederate flag represented the Confederate States of America, and a statue to a man represents the man, his life and his actions?
BTW: The term “Confederate Flag” is usually used to describe a particular battle flag.
Give them an inch & they’ll want a mile!
“”I would say that’s up to a local town, community, or the federal government, depending on where it is located,” he said.”
And he is correct.
The Robert E. Lee statue belonged to the City of New Orleans and it was the city’s choice to take it down.
The Confederate monuments in Baltimore belonged to Baltimore and it was their choice to remove the the monuments.
However, in the future, those cities have the option to replace the monuments.
Well said. I agree. This is a made-up issue by the Left.
These idiots who think the Confederate flag should come down do not even know that it was never flown over any Confederate government building. It was a flag to distinguish the Confederate army from the Union army.
If they are so upset about slavery then are they going to go after the American flag since it flew over slave ships, flew as America went westward while Native Americans were raped, forced from homes, and killed?
Then go after Washington, Jefferson, Mt Vernon . Then shall we have book burnings and write conservative on conservative businesses, because right now that is the way the left are going.
As for those supposedly on our side saying they do not care then get your head out of you a## and wake up to what is really going on in this country
Obama thought the Constitution should be a list of “negative” Rights, what the Federal Government could do “for” you, which really means what they can do “to” you.
Then he swore an Oath to Protect and Defend the REAL Constitution.
It is up to the voters of the city, town, state. What we have here though is people tearing down or vandalizing these things or attacking those peacefully protesting against the removal.
Also, POTUS never said he was for the Confederate flag yesterday did he?
he said that people were allowed to protest the statue being removed and some of the people doing that are good people not all Nazis.
He put blame on both sides who started violence. He never said I’m for the confederate flag did he?
He did ask where this nonsense will end with the removal of statues.
