For the past two years, the Young Americans for Freedom chapter at Southern Methodist University displayed nearly 3,000 American flags on a prominent university lawn to remember those killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
But Old Glory wont be posted on the Dallas Hall Lawn this year even though the display had been well-received by the student body.
The university objected to the location of the display, citing a revised policy aimed at protecting students from harmful or triggering messages.
While the University respects the rights of students to free speech, the University respects the right of members of the community to avoid messages that are triggering, harmful, or harassing, the policy reads.
I reached out to Southern Methodist University to find out who could possibly take offense at a memorial honoring American citizens killed by Muslim terrorists. I had my suspicions, but I wanted to hear it from the universitys leadership.
Spokesman Kent Best told me the revised policy covers all lawn displays, not just the 9/11 memorial.
He explained that a portion of the lawn is used for outdoor class space and studying and all sorts of collegiate activities activities that would have to be moved if the flags were displayed.
Instead, the flag display is being moved to a far-less prominent and less-trafficked part of the universitys campus.
SMU respects the rights of all campus community members to express their opinions, as well as their right to be free from coercion and harassment, Best told me.
Now, what is that supposed to mean?
Does the university fear that some students or faculty members might be coerced or harassed by a poignant reminder of the atrocities committed by Muslim terrorists on American soil?
To be fair, SMU said they have since updated their policy again to remove the poor wording regarding triggering or harmful messages.
Thats all well and good but the university clearly has concerns about coercion and harassment.
Grant Wolf, the leader of SMUs Young Americans for Freedom chapter, told me he was disappointed in the universitys decision and considers it to be an assault on free speech.
The universitys statement is reflective of a larger problematic attitude present on college campuses nationwide that the presentation of words and ideas constitute a kind of violence, or macroaggression, he told The Todd Starnes Show.
When we see our school use rhetoric of that ilk to defend a policy whose effect is the mitigation of debate and dialogue on campus, we students who love freedom have legitimate cause for concern, he added.
Now, theres a bit of a back story to this issue involving the universitys pro-life group and left-leaning students.
Last year, Mustangs for Life filled the lawn with thousands of crosses to symbolize children lost to abortion. The outrage from pro-abortion activists was overwhelming.
And that is what Wolf suspects is really behind the universitys decision to scuttle future memorial displays to a less prominent section of campus.
The fact that this display caused such controversy, combined with the universitys stated rationale claiming a right to be free from offense, provides circumstantial evidence that the university instituted this policy to prevent possible public outcry from students offended by or opposed to ideas presented in displays, Wolf told The Todd Starnes Show.
Southern Methodist University seems to function under the mistaken notion that young people and faculty members have a constitutional right not to be offended.
And yet, the university seems to believe that free speech must be muted for the sake of not hurting a collegiate snowflakes feelings.
And since Southern Methodist University refused to listen to the reasonable request from the Young Americans for Freedom, perhaps they will listen to the deep pockets of their donors and alums.
At the current pace of things....within five years....just showing a picture of a stick-man....will trigger someone to go through a period of micro-aggression. If you ask me....there’s some physiological issue here where we need to send some folks off to a Pacific island and just dump them there for a year of survival.
I would expect this in a blue state, but Texas? Wth!
It seems about half of America needs to grow the hell up.
Not just “Grow Up”, they need to learn this country’s real history, be proud of it, assimilate, and learn English. I am so damn sick of common core and all this revisionist history. Add these damn Muslims whom Jefferson knew they’d lie to non Muslims, and; not a one of our founding fathers would have allowed them here. These progressive hate America types and their commie pals like Obama and Valerie Jarret would never have been allowed to come here in the 50’s. The flag is most appropriate on 9/11. The flag is very special to all of us who have fought for this country. Add the national anthem too. Our country was founded by Christians and settled by them. A cross is our symbol. If they do not like it-LEAVE.
Everyone needs to understand that the global socialists are trying to erase any national pride. They see nationalism as an obstacle to their global agenda.
This is why they coined the term “white nationalism” in order to taint pride with racism.
In Europe, the global socialists have been successful. You do not see strong British pride, French pride or German pride. The people are sheep under a global leadership (the EU) not citizens of a historically rich nation.
This happens in Texas because our universities are over-run with global socialists. If you are a conservative and try to get a job at a college, they will deny you. If you manage to get a job and reveal your political leanings, they will marginalize you and force you out.
That is why there are so few who will stand up against this anymore on our university campuses....and why our youth are anti-capitalist and anti-American.
They worried about offending Muslims. Remind me of what SMU stands for now. Southern Muslim University?

This is so sick!..... my kids would be out of there so fast!
I think every American, regardless of color, capacity, intellect, economic status, footed or handed or not, should spend two years in one of our armed forced, period. Accommodations could be made for the truly handicapped but they should serve, too.
I think I might never have “grown up” if I hadn’t had that time in the Navy and learned, truly learned, why accountability, personal accountability, is the true measure of a mature human. I also learned the value of an articulated ethical and moral system and I learned patience. None of that has ever failed me since.
And why can’t we have an accountable to each one of nation? Only because we have too many people who manipulate for their own gain. Get rid of those people, make them work for the good of all man kind... I could go on, as you might expect.
Yes. Everyone should sign and understand they are responsible for allegiance to the United States. If they can’t in all honesty sign it, then off they go to a new country not demanding allegiance. There is no country on earth where freedom rings brighter than here and no country losing it quicker because of our Obamas and Jarretts.
Cut off their Gub’mint money. That is the only solution.
No university represents the state it’s in. This particular university is probably getting tons a money from leftist sources. And, likely, muslim organizations.
Just showing a TV rerun of
Goner Pyle, UDMC, would be offensive in their feeble minds I bet.
THIS is what's it's all about.
Leftist are shamed when we point out the abortion = mothers killing their babies.
There, I've said it.
That's what abortion is. The murder of an unborn baby. Not "tissue", not "part of my (women's) body, but rather a baby, growing inside a woman.
The Left can't stand anyone pointing out this truth, that a fetus, left alone, is growing into a baby.
It makes them look like the murderous harpies they really are.
It is NOT misogynist, racist or sexist to point this out. ANYONE can be against killing babies. AND... They SHOULD be against it.
Stick-persons (Why would you presume its gender?) are obviously triggering for anorexics and bulimics. Have you no compassion for them? /s
You nailed it beautifully....thanks.
My first thought about this incident.....Muslims are behind it.....b/c 9/11 is redolent w/ Muslimism.

Circa 2003: then-Gov Rick Perry advances Muslim teachings; builds mosque; sets up Texas Sharia Court
Then-Gov Rick Perry signs agreement with the Aga Khan--Muslim leader.
PERRY: It is a great honor to be in the presence of the Imam of 16 million Muslims around the world, a global humanitarian leader, a man of peace with a pluralistic vision for people around the world, His Highness, the Aga Khan, the 49th Hereditary Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims.
PERRY: Your Highness, on behalf of 23 million Texans, and over 600,000 thousand Muslims living in Texas, I extend our heartfelt appreciation for your 50 years of great international leadership."
PERRY: "We are delighted to welcome you to the Lone Star State and participate in the celebration of your Golden Jubilee. I am also grateful to the many federal, state and local leaders in attendance tonight. By their presence, these special guests convey the profound respect that exists in the Western World for His Highness work and leadership.
In April 2004, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and Univ of Texas-Austin finalized a grant proposal that created the partnership that became known as the Muslim Histories and Cultures Program (MHC).
MHC recruited and directly trained 80 teachers affecting approximately 15,150 students of World History and World Geography in ten key Texas districts in 2005 and 2006.
The purpose is two-fold 1) to fulfill Governor Rick Perrys desire to better educate Texas teachers on Muslim topics and 2) to train teachers to use a cultural lens approach to understanding other cultures.
GOVERNOR'S OFFICE STATEMENT : Governor Perry was instrumental in getting this program off the ground (and was helpful in getting a triumphal mosque built in Texas, and placing Sharia Law in the Texas justice system). ####
