A Texas community leader and ally to prominent Democrats has a history of making anti-Israel comments and associates with Hamas-linked groups, according to an investigation by The Dallas Express. Dr. Omar Suleiman is an Ethics Advisory Board member at Southern Methodist University (SMU) who called Israel a “terrorist regime,” said Palestinians experience what it is like to “live under Nazis,” warned “the beginning of the end of Zionism is here,” and said Palestinian activists must use “any means necessary” to “demand their freedom.” Suleiman made these remarks as an influential imam with nearly 6 million combined followers on Facebook, Instagram,...

SMU beat No. 25 Memphis 30-27 on Saturday to stay unbeaten, but the school’s students weren’t there to see it. Police ejected the entire SMU student section — which numbered roughly 1,000 — late in the first half for not wearing masks or adhering to social distancing guidelines.

Southern Methodist University officials on Tuesday revised a policy that aimed to protect students from "harmful or triggering" messages after a dispute erupted over an annual 9/11 installation that students had planned for the heart of campus. Nearly 3,000 flags have been placed on Southern Methodist University's Dallas Hall Lawn every year since 2010, but the group responsible for the display, Young Americans for Freedom, was recently told it must be moved. University officials told Grant Wolf, who leads SMU's Young Americans chapter, that the display can be placed only on Morrison-McGinnis Park, a less prominent campus location informally known...

For the past two years, the Young Americans for Freedom chapter at Southern Methodist University displayed nearly 3,000 American flags on a prominent university lawn to remember those killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. But Old Glory won’t be posted on the Dallas Hall Lawn this year – even though the display had been well-received by the student body. The university objected to the location of the display, citing a revised policy aimed at protecting students from “harmful or triggering” messages. “While the University respects the rights of students to free speech, the University respects the right of...

Memorial Day is fast upon us. To most Americans, it’s nothing more than a three day weekend bonanza of barbecues, beer, boating and the beach. Only seven percent of living Americans have ever served in the military and the other 93 percent seem to frolic and swig and eat on Memorial Day with very little regard for those who have given all that mortality can give. As Hack, the late Colonel David Hackworth once told me, ‘they’ll never understand; only we understand and we have the responsibility to remember them…forever.’ On this coming Memorial Day, let us pause and remember...

The 14-year-old daughter of a police officer executed at the July 7 Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas was notified by Southern Methodist University that she would not be able to serve an honorary serve in her father’s memory. SMU told her and her mother “that the demonstration could be deemed insensitive.” The University sent the communication to back out saying they were doing so because the volleyball program “feels that in light of recent events and diversity within the SMU community,” “the demonstration could be deemed insensitive.”

It started as an idea to honor a father who was also a Dallas Police officer killed during the July 7th sniper attack. ... Victoria Smith, 14, plays volleyball at Newman Smith High School in Carrollton. Recently, the SMU Women’s Volleyball team extended an invitation for her to make an honorary first serve at Saturday’s game. Then on Thursday, his widow Heidi Faith Smith received an email that left her stunned. “It just broke my heart to tell her…that the invitation had been taken away,” says Heidi Smith. In the email, Smith was told that “in light of recent events...

Five members of the Southern Methodist University band took a knee while playing the national anthem prior to their game against Texas Christian University. There were also a select number of students in the student section who joined in the protests. “I feel like coming from an African American background — I grew up in Detroit, Michigan, which is a predominantly black city — that I get tired of seeing my black brothers and sisters dying from injustices and unjustified reasons,” one student, Coda Boyce, told the Dallas Morning News. “I’m not against all police officers, I’m not saying all...

Obama to attend George W. Bush library dedication in Texas By DONOVAN SLACK | 4/2/13 7:40 PM EDT President Obama will travel to Texas later this month to attend the dedication of the George W. Bush George W. Bush Presidential Center at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, a White House official confirms to POLITICO. "It’s difficult to fully comprehend what it’s like to serve as President of the United States unless you’ve done it – and President Obama has developed a good relationship with both President George W. Bush and President George H.W. Bush," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said....

The suspicions of Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe were correct: Rather than sitting before the House Energy and Commerce Committee three weeks ago to explain theways he “crucified” oil and natural gas companies, insteadAl Armendariz – who cancelled his appearance at the last minute – met with the Sierra Club for a job interview. This time the recently resigned EPA’s Region 6 administrator will eagerly attack another fossil fuel, joining the litigious environmental group as part of its “Beyond Coal” campaign. If there was any question that Armendariz unfairly regulated the gas and oil businesses under his authority in Texas, Oklahoma,...

ESPN analyst Craig James, whose complaints about the way his son was treated led to the dismissal of Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, may be considering a career change. The former SMU football player said this week that he might consider running for U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison’s seat when she steps down this year. "I’m a Texan. I’m concerned for our country," James told WFAA-TV. "I disagree with the approach that we’re having, things that are taking place, and so whatever door opens up, I’ll look at it, if and when it opens up." James, 49, joins a growing...

Former SMU football star and ESPN Analyst Craig James has made news recently regarding his role with his son and former Texas Tech Football Coach Mike Leach. But James could be making news this year in politics, too. His name is being tossed around as a possible candidate to run for Kay Bailey Hutchison's seat when she resigns. News 8 talked to James who confirmed he is interested in getting involved in Republican Party politics, and he's not ruling out a run for office. James said in addition to his role as a college football analyst, he's also been in...

Former President George W. Bush, in his first open-to-the press appearance, said that as the world's economies recover, they should resist the temptation to replace free markets with government spending. Bush said he acted to funnel billions to banks because of a crisis situation. His action, he said, prevented a worldwide Depression. (Full quotes to come.) *** UPDATE *** NBC's Andrew Gross adds Bush's quotes: "The decision last fall was one of the most difficult of my presidency," Bush said in a speech on his vision for his presidential institute at Southern Methodist University. "I went against my free-market instincts...

'Southern Methodist University freshman Ryan Rosenbaum still has a lot of collegiate soccer ahead of him, but he'll be hard pressed to ever score as memorable a goal as he did Wednesday night. Up 2-1 against No. 16 Tulsa, SMU was on its heels trying to keep the Hurricanes from setting up the equalizer in the 63rd minute of their Conference USA game. Tulsa controlled possession, but an errant pass found the freshman Rosenbaum, who attempted to clear the ball downfield. Things ended up working out slightly better than expected'

WHEN A MARINE HELICOPTER bore George W. Bush away from the Capitol the afternoon of Jan. 20, the American people turned their attention, and desperate hopes, to his successor. Bush, meanwhile, moved into a new home in Dallas and took up the work of his post-presidency. He had often said that he viewed the Freedom Agenda — his campaign to promote democracy around the world, and above all in the Middle East — as the great legacy of his time in office. And now, even as Obama and his foreign-policy team edge away from the language of democracy promotion, which...
