U.S. investigators seek to turn Manafort in Russia probe: sources

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. investigators examining money laundering accusations against President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort hope to push him to cooperate with their probe into possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russia, two sources with direct knowledge of the investigation said.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team is examining Manafort's financial and real estate records in New York as well as his involvement in Ukrainian politics, the officials said.

Between 2006 and 2013, Manafort bought three New York properties, including one in Trump Tower in Manhattan. He paid for them in full and later took out mortgages against them. A former senior U.S. law enforcement official said that tactic is often used as a means to hide the origin of funds gained illegally. Reuters has no independent evidence that Manafort did this.

The sources also did not say whether Mueller has uncovered any evidence to charge Manafort with money laundering, but they said doing so is seen by investigators as critical in getting his full cooperation in their investigation.

"If Mueller's team can threaten criminal charges against Manafort, they could use that as leverage to convince him to cooperate," said one of the sources.

Rosenstein needs to be told what the rules are to rein in his dog Mueller.

Here is a perfect example of why finances can be investigated. You will have to fill in the dots by understanding who and how these are related
AZERBAIJAN
ARAS Agalarov
JR’s MEETING

If this was clinton’ name inserted and chelsea you would definitely want it looked into. Doesnt mean any chargeable offense happened

Could have been a trap designed for later nefarious purposes

Nothing. If it was me I’d tell them nunya. My business is outside the scope of the election. And that would be it. Period. Refuse to go along with their dog and pony show.

Mueller and Rosenstein should be called on to make a public statement regarding reports that Mueller is investigating crimes that happened before the campaign came into existence. Rosenstein is responsible, himself, for the jurisdiction that Mueller takes. Yes, he can defer, but the ultimate decision for limiting the jurisdiction is Rosenstein’s, and he exercised that power in DOJ Order 3915-2017.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

yup. rosenstein would be a good point of contact for the pressure to keep mueller in line.

How can someone who did not break the law, in other words pay cash for a property, be held accountable just because he’s asked where the money came from and he decides it’s none of anybody’s business and refuses to answer the question?

Because the AML laws of our country say so.

Not saying I agree or disagree with the law, just telling you why.

Does he really want to open Pandora’s box?

I hope he does. Not because I'm anti-Trump (I'm not!) because I want to see the Clinton's in jail where they belong.

Notorious..and ruthless.

Play with fire, you get burned. I'm not going to jump to conclusions, I want to see the truth come out and lead where it may.

Having said that, I think we all know that the job of a "special prosecutor" is to find someone -- anyone -- to pin some blame on, prosecute the hell out of them, throw them in jail and call it a day.

That's how special prosecutors justify their existence. Just ask Scooter Libby who was just vindicated as not having done anything wrong after serving time and getting his law license back recently.

Now where does he go to get his reputation back?

If they really piss off Trump, he may get other US prosecutors on his direct orders to bypass the possible non-cooperating Sessions or Rosenstein to go after the DNC, and the Clintons for their known crimes. There are about 90+ US Federal DAs these days.

I agree with everything you said. I want the truth to come out ...but it is fraught with the perils you point out

There are several side lawsuits that will bring out info. The Jody Kriss racketeering lawsuit even managed to get docs unsealed.
Manafort’s daughter and her husband are being sued over defaulting on mortgage loans. Interesting history there and ties into this discussion

And deripaska offered his testimony in exchange for immunity. So far immunity turned down that I know of

-- Financial dealing are within the scope as is anything he finds while Investigating. --

The scope is not what you claim, "anything he finds while Investigating." Make the argument within the language of the authorization given to Mueller, not some made up universal grant. How are 2008 or 2013 financial dealings of campaign advisors, directly related to "any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump."

You are parsing the grant as "directly related to individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump." That amounts to open season on those persons, without having to associate the transaction with the campaign.

I find the scope to be links between Russia and the campaign. A financial deal that is not part of a link between Russia and the campaign is not part of the authorization given to Mueller. The only reason "individuals associated with the campaign" appears in the authorization is that a campaign cannot commit a crime, only people can.

I take you you disagree, and find that DOJ Order 3915-2017 authorizes open season on all individuals associated with the campaign.

-- Rosenstein needs to be told what the rules are to rein in his dog Mueller. --

Elsewhere I posted this remark ...

I am not so quick to conclude that DAG (Acting AG for Mueller's purpose) Rosenstein would never fire Mueller. I think he would, given cause. Trump's lawyers can prepare the argument for cause and present it to Rosenstein. If he balks, present the case to the public and let Rosentein stew in those juices for awhile. Try to get get Congress people to adopt the argument and assert it to the press. Make the pressure on Rosenstein and Mueller intolerable.

Btw..for all those claiming it is no big deal to get mortgages..you need to dig deeper into the daughter and son in law of manafort.
Dustin Hoffman is suing them over what he calls a real estate ponzi scheme
