On paper it reads like a not-so-vague attempt to socially engineer your childs behavior. In reality, teacher-led mental health assessments coming to a growing number of public schools are a bureaucratic nightmare. One that will no doubt further clog our nations public education system with increased paperwork and administrative costs while putting your child's future at serious risk.
Thanks to Dr. Aida Cerundolo's piece in The Wall Street Journal, we are beginning to understand the real-life ramifications of these dangerous educational ideas. Want the Cliffs Notes version? Head over to the excellent summation by Emmett McGroarty and Jane Robbins, detailing the ramifications of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), a federal bill focused on the buzz-phrase Social Emotional Learning (SEL), the latest craze in public education. Schools in states that have ESSA legislation on the books can use the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) to fulfill ESSA paperwork requirements.
...every month the teacher must answer 72 questions about each of the perhaps dozens of students in her class. She must assess whether the student carr[ies] himself with confidence, whatever that means for a 5-year-old, and whether he can cope well with insults and mean comments.

AND these very unprofessional and biased assessments will be made part of the student’s permanent record.
I know more than a few feminazi teachers that go out of their way to scroo a kid because she hates his parent’s worldview.
Wake up parents! Home school is increasingly the way to go.
It’s not for THE children, it’s for YOUR children.
Just like NAZI Germany.
Dangerous web they’ve weaved.
Don’t you know?
They took a psychology course in college.

No wonder HS graduates can not read, perform simple arithmetic, and are ignorant of history, despite more and more money being spent.

LOL! I thought that those who had coping skills were the problem with leftist teachers/professors....if they ain't emotionally cripples misfits, they ain't been properly indoctrinated.
Practicing medicine without a license?
These teachers get a pass in mental exams. A good portion are mentally ill and deviants.
The program has been in place for a century. People are just starting to notice.
You know how people like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and John Kerry were selected for success early on? And helped along the way.
Then there are promising kids who get jacked up over a knife in a car or some other “crime” or mandated mental check that goes on their records and impedes a potential political career.
They are refining the process through this testing. They’ll have a pretty good idea of which kids to boost and will have a ready tool to sink the ones they don’t like.
I guarantee teachers do not want to do this nonsense paperwork. But bureaucrats keep piling on more and more. Teachers are taken out of the classroom to learn what these assessments are, then they need a day out of the classroom each month in order to fill out the paperwork. Throw on another assessment, and they need another day. Then they need a day to look at all the data. Then they need a day to retrain because their students are doing so poorly. Then all the students need remedial teaching in small groups because the teacher has been gone all semester. Then the tests that bureaucrats chose show that the students are falling behind, so those tests need to be dropped and easier tests given. A search for new screening and assessment begins. And so it goes.
It’s all about data. Data data data. You should see the assessments for preschoolers. And all the data collection. Teachers collect all the data. Is it quality data? Who knows? Does anyone ever use the data? Hahaha. Only to justify funding the collection of more data.
Crap like this is why we went the home school route in 2001.
My eldest was only in kindergarten when his teacher suggested to my wife that we have him tested for ADD. That was all the warning I needed. We pulled him out of the public school the very next day, and never looked back.
The greatest accomplishment of my child’s academic career in public schools in Iowa (schools better than most) was to make his elementary school teacher cry during a parent-teacher meeting. It had some resemblance to a Jack Nicholson “you can’t handle the truth” moment.
All I did was read back a few notes from observations i had made in her own class, where the over-riding mission was to kill the spirit of all young boys by medicating them. Hello Ritalin.
I resisted and turned into somewhat of a pariah, but the happy end was that the kid turned out ok.
Reminds me of the original plot of Miracle on 34th Street.
“Santa had to be crazy”, so the head of security at the Macy’s store had him committed.
Teachers ARE NOT trained psychologists, and any of them trying to act as one on any level, should be fired and prosecuted for practicing medicine without a license.
I’ve done a few mental health exams on teachers and university professors. It really pisses them off, especially when done in front of a class full of students.
We need Monthly Mental Health Exams on those teachers, done by CONSERVATIVES from the Heritage Organization, and Chaired by David Barton.
