People are increasingly buying more lethal guns, and arming themselves for purposes of protection rather than for hunting or recreation, new research shows.
In a study of gun manufacturing and sales from 1990 to 2015, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers shows that the production of larger-caliber handguns skyrocketed in this time period. The paper found that since 1994, the manufacture of .38-caliber guns rose 12-fold, with nearly 820,000 of the pistols produced in 2015. The manufacture of 9 mm guns also increased seven-fold in this 15-year stretch, while those larger than 9 mm jumped 150 percent

Sheesh. When I need firearms info I generally turn to American Journal of Medicine for accuracy. Notice in one of the pictures depicting "people" buying more and powerful firearms, it uh kinda looks like a CBP training class. Come on intrepid reporter, leave your desk and seek out the crazies out there. But newsWEAK..............

Deadlier guns? Who makes this crap up. I’ve got weapons that are almost 200 years old that are just as deadly as the ones made today.
To: rktman
larger-caliber handguns.38 and 9mm are certainly fine defensive rounds, but "larger-caliber"?

...”more lethal guns” and “Deadlier Weapons”...
Maybe there’s a Part 2 where he explains what that means?

Well, .38 and 9mm are larger caliber than say, .223.

I’m not clicking Newsweek. Does it show a bunch of young adults holding Desert Eagles? That would certainly paint the picture they want.
I choose 9mm because it doesn’t kill my old bones when I go out and practice.
To: carriage_hill
Tokarev rounds are small caliber, yet can be deadlier and more lethal than .45 rounds.
I’m confused.

Are these folks nuts? Since when are .38 (special, probably, but if .38 S&W, even sillier) and 9mm "larger caliber"? Larger than .22 rimfire, surely, but when I think "larger caliber" I'm thinking .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .45 LC, and of course the adorable .455 Webley. Never mind the .454 Casull, .475 Linebaugh, or one of the other "here, hold this!" rounds - this writer would wet himself if he heard one go off at the end of the block . . .
The rest of the article is, predictably, similar nonsense that has been debunked repeatedly.
Newsweak lives up to its name once again.

The paper found that since 1994, the manufacture of .38-caliber guns rose 12-fold, with nearly 820,000 of the pistols produced in 2015. The manufacture of 9 mm guns also increased seven-fold in this 15-year stretch, while those larger than 9 mm jumped 150 percent Easily explained by two factors:
1) The 1994 Clintoon Assault Weapon Ban that also limited handgun magazines to 10 rounds or less had an interesting byproduct: The sudden rediscovery and renaissance of the .45 caliber 1911. If civilians were to be limited to 10 rounds or less, they looked towards larger calibers.
2) During this time period the FBI, followed by local and state police forces, then subsequently by civilians, switched from the .357 and 9mm to the .40 S&W. That trend is now reversing, with the FBI and police departments returning now to the 9mm. This is providing the market with a glut of police trade-in .40 S&W handguns that are not moving very well.

They’re so deadly, you can’t touch them with your bare hands without you being killed instantly, don’t you know. You need special gloves made of dragon hide or something.

NO! The graph shows it flat in 2005. The sharp rise began 2008/2009!
What happened then?

Great Netflix series Crossing Lines starring Donald Sutherland, they gave a member of the International Criminal Court an engraved Heckler & Koch handgun for his birthday. When he remarked about the expensive gift, Sutherland’s character said,”They also make an excellent grenade launcher, but we figured that was more of a Christmas gift.”

I'm not clicking News-weak, either.
Any mention as to why more people are buying more and bigger guns? Like seeing all the news on leftists anarchists running around with pepper spray, baseball bats, bike locks, etc. and wearing masks to hide their identity?
Not to mention so many LEO just standing around watching until a Trump supporter is seen fighting back.....

Self protection is less and less of a motive. Culture and civilization protection is increasingly on peoples' minds. Folks should be acquiring long guns that fire military ammunition-.223, 5.56, 308 - and other relatively easily obtainable ̣when the stores are shuttered ammunition- 7.62x39 and x54, .22 LR & mag. and others.
