The principal of an alternative school in New Orleans was asked to leave his post this week after he was pictured standing near a Confederate flag the morning before the city removed a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee in downtown New Orleans.
Nicholas Dean, principal of Crescent Leadership Academy, confirmed Tuesday that he was told not to report to work for the next week or two after the photograph circulated on social media last weekend. The charter school serves students in seventh through 12th grades who have been expelled from other schools because of behavioral or other problems.
The school's superintendent, Tracy Bennett-Joseph, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment but told nola.com earlier Tuesday that the school would be "investigating" the incident over the next two weeks. The picture, which drew immediate attention on Facebook, depicts Dean standing near a man holding a Confederate flag who was part of a crowd that had gathered in Lee Circle. Dean said the photo was taken about 2:30 a.m. Friday, long before the Robert E. Lee monument was removed that afternoon.
When reached by phone, Dean said he was there because he thought the monument would be taken down in the night and he wanted to witness it happening.
He said he was there for just a few minutes and left once he saw there was no equipment in place to take the statue down. He insisted that the photograph was taken "out of context."
"I went to see history in the making," Dean said. "And now I am history."
The photograph of Dean, which was posted on Facebook by Sunday, had been shared more than 280 times by Tuesday afternoon. Several commenters expressed outrage after assuming from the picture that Dean had been attending protests as a pro-monument supporter.
"Why is this man, a principal of a school of black and minority students, advocating for monuments of hate?" asked Malik Bartholomew, a Dillard University employee and resident who shared the photograph. "The men whose monuments he was supporting were members of the Confederacy and they were against black education."
Other Facebook commenters agreed with Bartholomew. But some questioned Dean's suspension.
Season of the witch hunt, isn’t it?
The chocolate city has become dark and bitter. Good place to avoid other than to monitor it for massive election fraud.
Political correctness run amok. The period of time when there was a separate republic established in what is now the territory of the United States of America, is gradually being written out of history and out of the literature that once respected this now faded glory.
See how fast history gets rewritten in the parts of the world that have fallen under the domination of a radical Muslim majority. Temples and churches get “repurposed” into animal stables or even into mosques, which may be an even greater insult to the former occupants.
The City of New Orleans is being repurposed into a modern, slick version of its Hollywood depiction.
Make no mistake. This is not just the chocolate city this crap is popping up everywhere.
Season of the stupid “on a witch hunt”.
>The principal of an alternative school in New Orleans<
Probably a leftard.
The left is starting eat its own.
Rejoice! Deplorables!
Anyone who has a job or hopes to have one in the future should never have a social media page.
Too bad the racist sons-of-biches didnt associate him with the 2 American flags flying even closer to him in the picture.
Liberal/progressive self identification continues.
This is really getting absurd....
Tell them, "No".
That’s a new branch of law enforcement. The Standing Near Something Police.
I invite them to come to Gettysburg Bike Week and take all the flags and patches from the bikers.
Bring Katrina back, she didn’t finish the job, there’s more to clean up.
It wasn’t his page - he had no control over the photo being circulated because it wasn’t his social media page. The whole NOLA fiasco is just the natural end of the creeping socialism that started over 50 years ago, now become fully-grown Leninism. As to the comment on opposing “black education,” I’d contend the evidence from comments in the article expose that effort as a total failure. It’s apparent there’s very little critical thinking taking place.
... but I don't think it's the same guy.
Its a little bit more difficult for Dean to say he was just an ‘observer’ after seeing that photo isn’t it?
Clearly he’s not.
I suppose a new ‘less than civil’ war is in the offing if we are continued to be treated like 3rd class citizens. My question is. What’s the tipping point??
