A look at UW shooting 'self-defense' case (January Milo Yiannopoulos event)

SEATTLE - Two months after a shooting on the University of Washington campus, a woman went public claiming she fired her gun in "self-defense" that night of the Milo Yiannopolous. However, the person she was defending was her husband.

The Hokoanas’ attorneys referred to evidence they had collected in the case, including a police radio recording that indicates the victim may have been armed.

According to a search warrant affidavit, the victim was 34-year-old Joshua Dukes.

When the couple, Elizabeth and Marc Hokoana, turned themselves into police, they claimed they were involved in a "self-defense" shooting.

Both are claiming Elizabeth fired the gun, through their attorneys.

“We feel convinced at this stage that not only was Elizabeth responsible for shooting the gun, but when she did she was acting lawfully,” said Kim Gordon, Marc Hokoana’s attorney.

She declined to go into detail of what happened that night but said the strength of their self-defense case is based on questions posed by state law.

“Does the person using force have a reasonable belief given what they're seeing, hearing, experiencing, that someone else is about to be injured or killed?” said Gordon. “And the second thing is, is the amount of force a reasonable response to the threat?”

Both of the Hokoanas' attorneys mention recorded police, fire, and EMS radio traffic from that night.

About 20 minutes after the first report of the shooting, an emergency personnel appeared to be speaking with a dispatcher, and makes a statement about the shooting victim over the radio.

Here is part of the verbatim of the recording:

“The victim can provide no information about the suspect or where the shooting occurred…however he was armed with brass knuckles and a large knife.”

First responders radioed that Joshua Dukes -- the shootee -- was in possession of brass knuckles and a large knife. In another report, Dukes claims the "brass knuckles" were actually a "plastic finger strengthener". I have not seen any statement from Dukes regarding the first responders' statement that he carried a large knife.

The "plastic finger strengthener" Dukes claims was mistaken for brass knuckles.

Used to keep a roll of quarters in the car to use in case of a fight - wrap your fingers around it and make a fist. Supposedly hardened the fist a bit, and added some weight to the punch.

I’m not sure if it did any good or not, but the “plastic finger strengthener”, IF that is what it was, could serve a similar function. Frankly, I doubt that’s what it was. I mean, why would a snowflake/anarchist be carrying a plastic finger strengthener with him when he wanted to start a fight?

Let’s get it straight that the “victim” here is / was a leftist thug who was either roughing up a Trump supporter at that point or was about to.

MY first question is “was this finger strengthener found at the scene?” My second question is “what about the knife?”

Google the guy....some weird stuff pops up.

“...roughing up a Trump supporter at that point or was about to.”

Some reports said that the shooter’s husband, who was being attacked, , was in fact, an anti-Trump guy.

Dukes claims the "brass knuckles" were actually a "plastic finger strengthener".

It doesn't much matter whether it was brass knuckles or a plastic finger strengthener.

If a reasonable person could believe it was a deadly weapon, then it was a deadly weapon.

You ought to be careful what you're holding if you're going to assault someone.

Some reports said that the shooter’s husband, who was being attacked, , was in fact, an anti-Trump guy.

Those early reports were shown to be inaccurate two months ago.

“Me getting shot is a manifestation of Trump’s and Milo’s violent ideology,” he says

The shootee is also a member of Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) General Defense Committee

“Some reports said that the shooter’s husband, who was being attacked, was in fact, an anti-Trump guy.”

Those reports would be absolutely wrong. Fog of war, perhaps. From the article of an earlier FR thread:

“Marc Hokoana, whose Facebook page has indicated he is a supporter of President Donald Trump, Yiannopoulos and the National Rifle Association...”

“The search-warrant affidavit identified the shooting victim as Joshua P. Dukes, 34, a computer-security engineer and Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) organizer. ... Dukes was an early opponent of Yiannopoulos’ appearance at UW and worked to organize resistance among a number of groups. He was “in the crowd of protesters in a physical altercation” when he was shot in the stomach...”

Both are claiming Elizabeth fired the gun, through their attorneys.

Well, no one is going to complain about anyone firing a round through two attorneys.

Crime scenes are never like you see on TV. Guns, other weapons and evidence are often taken by collaborating or simply thieving on-lookers/participants.

Oh boy here we go. I did a search for "finger strengthener" + Seattle and look what we got here:

The "victim"'s "partner", Sasha, "who requested their last name not be printed", would like us to believe that the "victim" "was actually only carrying a plastic finger strengthener used by guitarists".

Uh huh. I trust somebody who demands that I refer to him/her as "they" and "them", don't you?

So the crime is the bad, bad PLASTIC finger exercisers and the KNIFE just went ‘missing’ before authorities got there?

There was, or there wasn’t. That seems pretty simple to me.

The “truth” not withstanding,, the evidence is what proves things in court. No evidence, no fact. does not mean anything regarding the truth. But you know that.

There's a major difference between finger straighteners and brass knuckles. One is made of plastic and the other of brass or other hard metal easily spotted by first responders, who see them on a nightly basis.
