When cops encounter knives, shooting is not the only option (barf alert)
Chicag Tribune ^ | 6 apr 2017 | Steve Chapman

The man in the Camden, N.J., police video is practically begging to be shot. After using a knife to menace a cashier and a customer in a fast-food restaurant, he strides down a street slashing at the air as police repeatedly order him to drop his weapon. The man keeps walking, defiantly waving the knife.

Several cops form a ring around him and move along at a safe distance, block after block. This goes on for several tense minutes, as the viewer waits for shots to ring out. But they never do. Eventually, the man drops the knife and is collared.

It's a reasonably happy outcome. Had the 2015 incident occurred a year earlier, before the department adopted new tactics, "we would more than likely have deployed deadly force and moved on," Chief J. Scott Thomson told The New York Times. Instead, the offender survived, and no cop had to deal with the trauma of killing him.

The left here will eventually have our police departments disarmed along with the legal citizens.

How was this a happy ending? A POS, who will DEFINITELY hurt someone one day, lived.

I suppose they could use GIGANTIC SUPER MAGNETS to yank the knife right out of the perp's hand.

“Several cops form a ring around him”

Probably a good moment to NOT start shooting.

“Instead, the offender survived, and no cop had to deal with the trauma of killing him.”

...and everybody lived happily ever after!~sarc.

Who truly wants the offender to “survive”? Now he’s around to “offend” again. Any cops middle name should be “trauma”. It’s their job.

What’s next? Isis survived. And nobody in the military had to deal with trauma?!

The scene from “Raiders of the Lost Ark” comes to mind.

Harrison Ford was surrounded. The guy steps out wielding a huge knife; twirling it around like a pro.

Harrison sighs, grimaces and promptly pulls out his gun, shoots him dead and moves on.

Yup. Now that is how it should be handled.

Maybe cops should have swords or sabers. This was the standard for militaries and nobles well into the 19th century.

But everyone knows that a lunge with a knife at a short distance will beat drawing a gun out of a holster.

That seems like a nice ending. If the cashier had his throat slashed, probably not a nice ending. If at some point in the walk, a cop had tripped trying to “circle him”, and he had taken that opportunity to lunge and stab the cop, probably not a good outcome. If someone had walked out a door and accidentally bumped into a cop and gotten hurt, or the perp had attacked another civilian, not a good outcome.

Yes, if you avoid deadly force against someone who is threatening deadly force, sometimes they will eventually give up. But you need to compare all outcomes, to determine if this approach always gives you a better result.

Yeah, but that twirling knife guy was an idiot.

If you intend to kill someone with your blade, you don’t start doing kata at 30 ft...

The most dangerous knife you can wield is the knife your opponent never even saw.

As a former cop I can say we trained for knife scenarios. I thug with a knife who is within 15 feet of you can become lethal is a few seconds - especially if that thug is trained with edge weapons and knows how and where to deliver a fatal slash that will cause the LEO to bleed out in two minutes.

Knife in the hands of a thug should always mean drawn weapon in the hands of a cop. NOTHING LESS.

Nobody has a full set of information here, not you nor I. Could this be someone who went insane?

The most puzzling thing: no tasers. Hello this is why the taser was invented.

We do know he was waving a knife with no problem.

You do that recently? I haven’t.

He WILL hurt somebody.
