# 18 "Do be do be do" Attributed to Frank Sinatra HA! I loved Frank, but I thought 'Strangers in the Night' was mediocre for a man with his talent. Honestly, when I first heard him do the "Do be do be do" I almost PLOTZED! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHuko5BCFzA&list=RDnHuko5BCFzA

“Also, Walmart and target are getting better at having food delivered to you. That is another option.”

As I have a serious mobility problem, Walmart delivery of food has been a godsend to me. I can get most of what I need through their home delivery. Even milk. You can buy ultra pasteurized boxes of milk (I use Parmalot) that is real milk, and tastes great. It comes in special cardboard containers, by the quart.

Walmart also sells “survivor” food (it’s cheaper; I get Augason Farms brand) for such items as potato gems (makes wonderful mashed potatoes, just about any vegetable (like green/red peppers, mushrooms, corn, beans, onions, celery, etc.) that would otherwise spoil as can’t be kept long; that you rehydrate and therefore don’t need to go out to the grocery store all the time to buy fresh. Tastes just as good and great for stews, soups, etc. It’s amazing how innovative you have to get when you can’t walk well or are somehow housebound.

By the way, CVS Pharmacy now has curbside food pickup; you get their App online; place your order and they bring it out to your car. That way you can fill in the gaps for fresh food, as you can get bread, milk, butter, eggs, etc. Where there is a will, there is a way. Check out the CVS website for info.

"I contacted them last week as we need some help. The social worker who called back let me know that my wife and I don’t qualify. I’m 100% totally and permanently disabled (housebound) according to Veterans Affairs and my wife has lost her sight due to strokes. Who exactly qualifies?"

I called the other day and the only qualifications they told me for Meals On Wheels to come to your house was over 60 and unable to drive. They also have cafe's where you can go and eat for $2.75 or a donation. They never said anything about qualifying due to income.

You said a social worker called you back. Did you call the Meals On Wheels directly, because I don't think there is a Social Worker attached to them? This is all done by volunteers. Look on the Internet for your local Meals on Wheels.

Yes, I contacted them through their local website. Neither of us is yet 60, maybe that’s it. If I could travel to their location to eat I could also drive to McDonalds or 1,000 other places.

Oh, she never said exactly that she was a social worker, but I’ve been with the government most of my life .... I know when I’m talking to a social worker.

Grocery stores are doing curb side pick up too.

the Kroger brand of stores has started it. Not sure if their affiliates are doing it too.

A relative was amazed at the amount of people that use the service. He says he always sees multiple store people with their big carts filling the orders.

target has been more limited in their shipping of groceries but they do in store pick of more of a selection. One tip for target that worked was that you could buy a target gift card to help you get to your minimum order amount for free shipping. don’t know if it still works.

Let's start with a basic fact. Contrary to news reports last week, President Trump is not eliminating funding for Meals on Wheels. He's not even cutting it.

How do we know this? Meals on Wheels says so. A statement issued by Meals on Wheels America on Thursday notes that.."

Could a local church help out with delivery? Get some youngsters involved? I’d suggest it to my church, but we are over 600 miles too far north...

"That way you can fill in the gaps for fresh food, as you can get bread, milk, butter, eggs, etc."

When we first moved to California from WA State,(back in WA now) we had 2 small children. We went grocery shopping and they would not take our check as it was an out of state bank. Thank the Lord they had milk delivery's back then and one came to our door and said if we would sign up for milk delivery he would give us eggs, butter, cottage cheese and milk as a gift for signing up. Then we discovered there was a grocery truck that came around where you could get bread, soups, canned goods etc.

It would be great if they had that again.

First of all, a great editorial. The Truth is a powerful weapon when it sees the light of day.

Secondly, I’d like to know the demographics of who is served by Meals on Wheels besides the generic “homebound, disabled, poor, etc).

These groups do a wonderful job of helping those in need, but we need to know more about the “need” in order to help it if we want to or can.

I’m going to tell my own little story, not about Meals on Wheels, but on when someone needs a helping hand on a temporary basis. It might explain some of the funding problems voluntary groups are facing (which are not mentioned in most stories).

In 1988 we closed our family business after 50 years in the same kind of sales (plumbing supplies/wholesale to the trade). I had a son who was 13 and a daughter who was 8, and my wife.

Baltimore Unemployment lost my records for almost 2 months, which necessitated my making several trips there to reconstruct them and to show that one of the people handling my case was an outright liar (the sound of fear by the guilty person came over the phone when their superior asked who signed my papers and then lost them).

Meanwhile, our water heater died as did our refrigerator. We packed our food in ice for almost 3 weeks until a relative found us a workable used frig in a house he was working on. I found a dinked heater at Sears, got it at a greatly reduced price, put it in my old car and took it home. Put it in myself. Saved about $200 or more.

I applied to Arlington County for assistance (where I lived) and got nothing. They said to ask local charities, which I did (and which I had supported when I could afford to). They said that they were out of money because it all went to an overwhelming influx of illegals (mainly Hispanics - the Vietnamese took care of their own).

Another friend gave me parttime work painting and fixing up her Civil War house and my sister-in-law’s husband gave me some pick up work with him fixing houses, etc.

Finally unemployment came through and helped to get us by until I got full-time work with a great Temp agency.

My cousin bought my son some clothes for his Bar Mitzvah, which was a great Mitzvah on his part (a voluntary good deed - in Hebrew).

Another member of my synagogue lent me money though I never asked for it. He was a “mensch” (a gentleman), the kind of man you would want for your grandfather or uncle.

Lessons from this: Look to your family and friends first because you can’t always rely on your local, state or national government.

As the song says “We Are Family” and “That’s What People Are For”.

In the case of your local Wheels on Meals, send them a donation on your own, unsolicited, “compliments of a Pres. Trump supporter”. That won’t make the news but it will certainly help someone in need and you don’t need any credit for doing it. Just be a good person, a “mensch” and look yourself in the mirror. You’ll be smiling back at yourself with good reason.

I’m okay with buying wheelchairs for these people so they can roll themselves to the food bank.

I disagree with the food for pets. Let the program feed humans, only.

It does help people.

Good. Then it should have no problem raising donations once it's 100% privatized, like every charity should be.

“Grocery stores are doing curb side pick up too.”

I was snooping around googling, and discovered tonite that Whole Foods (a grocery store in the Chicagoland area and maybe elsewhere too) does actual home delivery. As my refrigerator croaked about a week ago, and a new one is coming this Friday, I may order in some fresh food like apples, onions, butter, eggs, etc. after the new Fridge comes, as the first order is delivered free.

I’ve lost some food, and put the rest that I could fit into the freezer part of my 20 year old fridge (the bottom part is deader than a doornail, but for some reason the top freezer part still works), turned the temp down in the freezer, and hope its preserving some of my food, otherwise I’m out all of my Fridge food (bye bye $$$).

Nice timing when I’ve been trying to get my condo ready to sell for a move to Florida. I’ve had it with blue IL. Well, at least I’l be able to use the new Fridge as a selling point.
