Trump did not cause the deep division in the country. It caused him. There are two very different Americas. I suspect that the half of the country that voted for Trump, that voted with wild enthusiasm, that roared at huge rallies, was not so much voting for Trump as against the other America. It was just that they had never had a chance before. The two countries have little in common and do not belong on the same geography.
Whether Trump proves to be the catastrophic buffoon he apparently aspires to be, the current protests illuminate a stark difference between his supporters and Hillarys. The chasm is far deeper than just politics, embracing culture, taste, manners and morals. The groups are distinct and incompatible .
The difference begins with manners. Throughout the campaign Trumps partisans forgathered in huge rallies, applauded, calmly went home, and later voted. At the same time we saw on Clintons behalf mobs of ill-bred, worse mannered, loutish, perennial adolescents blocking highways, shutting down rallies, engaging in vandalism and physically attacking supporters of Trump. Cars were destroyed, fires set, ATMs smashed. Black Lives Matter, always ghetto predators, were worst, but low-grade college students and their equally dismal professors joined in. They were obscene, infantile.
And naive: They apparently believe that they harm Trump though of course their behavior drives people in the other direction. I am no fan of Donald , but I look the foregoing and think Anything else.

In reality, the division is fostered by just a few with a relatively small army.
Never concede an ounce of soil.

Uhmmmm....yep.
Great article
My favorite line:
I imagine Rachel Maddow with twelve body segments and compound eyes.
I couldn't help but notice that this writer took at least three cheap shots at Trump.
Time for the Cuckservatives to pick a side.
This article reminded me of how Rush Limbaugh describes seeing groups of the Congressional ‘RATS — they look like the bar scene in the original Star Wars movie. And they do!
fred Reed is the best
I've read Reed for many years. And you either have never read him or you do and you're trying to pigeonhole him into what you think a conservative should be. That's identity politics, friend. It's unforgiving extremism just as the self-styled liberals are doing.
Fred Reed is a rare bird. I don't think he's against Trump per se. Just hoping for the best while bracing for a reality which may or may not be. Reed despises Obama, despises the Clintons, despises McCain, TOTALLY despises the Bushes especially 43, despises feminists, despises liberal academics, despises a LOT of the sort that's brought this country to the brink of ruin. Reed is jaded, and I don't really blame him. Better to be cautiously pessimistic and vigilant now so as to be delighted with surprise later, than to NOT be vigilant. Trump is still just a man. And as Tolkien elaborated upon, power and glory has a way of tempting and corrupting any man.
“Whether Trump proves to be the catastrophic buffoon he apparently aspires to be...”
So. This neverTrump asshat still doesn’t get it? How stupid can a human being be and still continue to write “conservative” political blogs? Apparently very stupid.
I’ll leave his satire and witticisms for the weakly standard crowd.
See my comment at #9.
I’ve read Fred Reed off and on for several years. He tends to be a bit too self righteous for me.
“not so much voting for Trump as against the other America.”
Yup!
The mistake of the Hilary camp was to get out of touch with reality, out of touch with real people.
Trump fans need to avoid becoming like Hilary. Many people who voted for Trump, and continue to support him now, are not Trump fans and never will be.
Trump has seemingly endorsed Paul Ryan’s Obamacare-lite. Many Trump voters, including Trump fans and those who just voted against Hilary, are strongly opposed to Obamacare-lite.
Trump fans make a big mistake if they require 100% support of Trump’s Obamacare-lite.
Likewise on an single issue. Trump is no more infallible than the Pope.
Hillary was in touch with the very real people that make this country suck - and she received more votes than Trump. Thankfully she didn’t get them where she needed them, and didn’t reach the 50% of votes cast - she can never say she was the voters’ choice if more than half the voters chose someone other than her (her husband won twice, but with the same issue - never got 50% of the vote).
Romney was right when he said his opponent started out with 47% of the vote; it isn’t a small army. A small group of commissars at the top, maybe - but masses of useful idiots looking for a purpose below them.
I find this neither interesting nor colorful. It is only at the end that the writer admits he has no love for Trump. However, there are some truths in what he says about why the great divide.
The sole item that Reed has against Trump is his stand on illegal immigration. And the probable reason for that is that Reed retired to Mexico so his retirement funds would go further and married a Mexican after being there awhile. Reed contends that conservatives are “anti-immigration” rather than “anti-illegal”.
Good observation...probably has a recovering #nevertrump fan base...like so many of these newly minted freepers.
Excellent observation... Half of them folks have got to be from Mars or something...

Whether Trump proves to be the catastrophic buffoon he apparently aspires to be...” My brother loeves this guy. To me he’s a crank.
