Actually, I worked at a DOE research lab early in my career too, and I see their value. However, their scale of spending is not matched by the economic return. I’m okay with some federal funding for basic and applied research, but not when it’s treated like Monopoly money, where too little attention is paid to whether the taxpayers are getting their money’s worth.
The pink-hat nonsense on Saturday was all about stopping THAT

Well a cynic such as myself would definitely make sure to defund them just to be able to say their ‘march’ meant nothing.
If you don’t then say will say ‘they won’....
See the GOP (and donkeys) that support PBS/NPR. Is your congress critter on the list?
It’s an old list.
That is exactly what I want too. If I moved into a mansion, where I never paid the mortgage but allowed the interest to add up for my kids to repay, and if I then renovated frequently and built stylish but nonessential additions, paying for those with debt to be repaid by my kids, decent people would be disgusted at my conduct. FedGov's spending over the past two decades is no different.
“Now is the time for Action”.
[ and that basic research filters into hundreds of uses in industrial applications.]
As long as “climate change” isn’t one of those...
The smaller corporations, which create most of the jobs, NEVER HAD THE MONEY to spend on basic research.
i am so glad that we have ego correctors like you around. what we do without you?
‘Sort of’ funny that when PBS goes out with hat in one hand and the other trying to collect money, they ‘claim’ that the Government Funding is minuscule and we ‘need’ your money.
Well, if it doesn’t mean that much then they should not take it or at least should not gripe when it is suggested it be removed.
Like a wag a long time ago said...sure, a Billion here, a Billion there and before long you are talking REAL money.
Oh yes, I understand exactly what you said. In their defense, I could say that basic science and fundamental research is expensive and it is virtually impossible to expect good ROI on every initiative.
Trump is amazing already and he is just starting. I bet HUD, EPA, Education, and like you said some DoD areas will be completely changed or cut completely. Add UN and NATO and we will really be seeing some debt reduction FINALLY.
Do that and all we will need is an additional $10.495 trillion to meet the $10.5 trillion goal.
That march was all about intimidating the usual assortment of linguini-spined Republicans out of cutting funding.
Otherwise you've got a Belushi-moment ... "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" "Germans?" "Forget it, he's rolling" ...
I don’t want to “privitize” NPR. I want to acknowledge “we own it” and close its doors, selling off any assets, bit by bit, and giving any proceeds to the U.S. Treasury.
We’re Broke.

Good news.

Oops, need some editing.
Those Agencies are discretionary, like buying Cigarettes FOR YOURSELF instead of BUYING Milk for your Children. #;^)
