Oh yes, I understand exactly what you said. In their defense, I could say that basic science and fundamental research is expensive and it is virtually impossible to expect good ROI on every initiative.

Basic scientific research is a very good place for the Government to invest some $. That said there needs to be financial discipline and a lean managerial staff.

Basic science was already cut way back a decade or more ago as grants dried up in favor of climate change & support for the soft sciences both of which is only a way to swallow dollars and promote a social agenda. Hopefully the grant priorities will be realigning with National interest.
