Donald Trump’s inauguration ratings were the second-highest in 36 years, according to Nielsen.
The swearing-in of the 45th president was seen by 30.6 million viewers across 12 networks.
The only inauguration over the last three decades that tops Trump’s number in the linear ratings? Barack Obama’s first inauguration back in 2009, which had a record-setting 37.8 million viewers.
Before that, you’d have to go all the way back to Ronald Reagan in 1981, who was seen by 41.8 million viewers (Nielsen tracks inauguration ratings back to 1969).
The numbers are all the more remarkable considering Trump is entering into office with rather low approval ratings compared to past presidents and sparked protests worldwide along with vows to not watch his inauguration.
And actually, Trump might have been seen by more viewers than either Obama or Reagan. Nielsen ratings do not account for online viewing, which has grown sharply in recent years and is far more commonplace than even four years ago. CNN, for example, clocked 16.9 million streams on its website, tying with Election Day for the site’s top event.

First black president...understandable.
Frankly, Nielsen lost control of the viewership monopoly a long time ago.
Millions of people don’t watch TV anymore. I saw the inauguration online.
Which means that they have no clue. Trump's election proves that traditional media have lost their dominance.
And that is what makes Nielsen irrelevant.
My personal view is that the only entity capable of evaluating (if they had a mind to and were truthful) the viewership would be the NSA. But that is problematic in itself. :0)
Plus almost nobody had to take time off work.

Viewing Obamas inauguration was like driving by a nasty car wreck at slow speed.
I watched online.
His election was result of white guilt which had been leveled against the white majority for decades by media and liberal educrats fanning the flames of racism. It greased the skids to place a certified Marxist and Islamic change agent in the oval office.
Besides, Obama is as white as he is black. Half of his genetic material comes from his white mother.
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is black. Yet, he's called an uncle tom, which demonstrates that "being black" has little to do with ones race and everything to do with one's marxist/socialist/progressive world view.
Saw a bit on NBC, Fox, FNC and FBC, but c-span blew them all off the map. The non-edited, non-commentated live c-span feeds of everything that happened were so much better than any of the establishment channels there was no comparison.
I remember Obama’s...my work had the inauguration on inviting staff to watch together. This time? Nope.
I was working. My local talk radio DID NOT broadcast the oath, just stated at the end of the noon *news* (CBS)that he had taken the oath. I listened to Rush, finished up and then viewed on YT.
How do they count that?

I think it's a silly waste of time trying to calculate who was there and who was watching at home.
Many if not most DJT voters work for a living, and could not take time off to attend the inauguration in person.
