The 7th of this month marked two years to the day since two gunmen walked into the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris and murdered twelve people. This period also therefore marks the second anniversary of the period of about an hour during which much of the free world proclaimed itself to be "Charlie" and attempted, by walking through the street, standing for moments of silence or re-tweeting the hashtag "Je Suis Charlie" to show the whole world that freedom cannot be suppressed and that the pen is mightier than the Kalashnikov.
So two years on is a good time to take stock of the situation. How did that go? Did all those "Je Suis" statements amount to anything more than a blip on the Twitter-sphere? Anyone trying to answer such a question might start by looking at the condition of the journal everyone was so concerned about. How has it fared in the two years since most of its senior editorial staff were gunned down by the blasphemy police?
Not well, if a test of the magazine's wellbeing is whether it would be willing to repeat the "crime" for which it was attacked. Six months after the slaughter, in July 2015, the new editor of the publication....

Prolonged outspokenness was also the death of Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, though he kept his panache stainless to the last.
Most artists are not formidable warriors like Cyrano, but the answer is not meek submission and self-censorship, but bold, outrageous onslaughts from hiding. The enemies' overreaction will undo them, because deprived of a specific enemy to punish, they will lash out at everyone, and everyone will inevitably lash back. Remember Alan Moore's "V," and also Fulgencio Batiste's last days as dictator.

Eastern Jews and Christians survived for centuries as dhimme, and now the former live in Israel and are free at last. Unfortunately, the Eastern Christians are being wiped out, except those living close enough to Putin’s forces to get to safety, and those they haven’t killed yet. Somebody must confront these SOBs.

This is a pretty good description of how Trump and the conservatives won, I think! The left lashes out at everyone who is not on board with their agenda.
A slow boat to Afghanistan—wait. That’s land locked. OK. A parachute drop of every mother’s son of them over Afghanistan. They’ll have a sail on parachutes, cheap, at the five and dime. Don’t spend a lot of time showing them how to open them. But DON’T fire bomb a mosque. /s
