Groups that advocate for LGBT troops were said they were assuaged by retired Gen. James Mattis’ Thursday testimony suggesting he won’t roll back rules set by the Obama administration allowing such service members to serve openly.
“We are heartened by Gen. Mattis’ stated commitment during his testimony not to reverse the profound progress we have made in ensuring LGBT service members and their families are able to serve our nation with pride,” American Military Partner Association President Ashley Broadway-Mack and OutServe-SLDN Executive Director Matt Thorn said in a joint statement.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter lifted the ban on transgender troops serving openly last summer and the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that banned gay service members from serving openly also came during the Obama administration.
Outside groups had been worried that Mattis, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to head the Department of Defense, would be hostile to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender troops based on past statements he’s made blasting civilian leaders with a “progressive agenda” imposing “social change” on the military.
He was pressed on those issues by multiple Democrats during Thursday’s confirmation hearing and ultimately said he would not roll back the changes unless a service secretary tells him there is a proven issue with the policy. At first, he demurred when asked if gay troops were undermining the military’s lethality. But asked later by Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) whether there’s anything innate about being a woman or identifying as LGBT that would prevent someone from serving in a lethal force, Mattis flatly said, “No.”

I heard him skip over her question that way.

Everyone should remember, these guys and gals are in something a lot like job interviews, they are answering questions to get them through, I wouldn’t say they are lying but they are not going to create waves at the same time.
This is going for all of the folks we have seen questioned, Carson, Tillerson, Sessions and so on.
For whatever the link says and just for me, I'd never trust Democracy Now or at least, I'd do further research on the story. Some of the things they run are even like Communist propaganda, Russian propaganda.They are definitely anti-GOP too.
And they really are anti-GOP, I think Democracy Now was where I heard some professor interviewed saying the electoral college should elect Hillary because she won the popular vote.

I am familiar with Democracynow. However, I didn’t recognize Haditha. I remembered Mai Lai.
It is the only issue the demrats care about, putting some mental case in charge of same sex men.

I hope he's setting them up for the fall, and not those of us who have spent not a little time serving our country in uniform, and who despise the changes Obama and his sissy appointments have inflicted on our military.
I’m hoping his hatred for Hezbollah and Iran will keep him true to his word about keeping the PT standards and not allow anyone to fudge reports. He does have two weaknesses in my opinion. He assisted Petraeus with COIN and the ROE and the other is his past view of PTS. I don’t know if it has changed.
It was so hard to get rid of a sub-standard soldier that I would never boot a good soldier, gay or not.
The problem I see currently is the co-opting of good soldiers by SJW.
Would have been pretty simple too. He could have just asked, what is the primarmission of the armed forces? Hint, it isn’t a social experiment. He could have followed up with.. have you ordered anyone into a firefight, where you knew some would die? He. Didn’t do either of these things, he just went pc on them. Now, what will he really do?
Or an enemy who gets around our defenses and hits our enemies personally, we use tons of aerial assault and drones now. But if somehow tech was disabled, what would we do?
Big problem is pot heads and fatso. They don’t belong in the Military. Want a sex change, pay for it yourself.
I don’t get it. Why do these nominees feel so obligated to placate the left with these assurances, when the left isn’t needed for confirmation?
It could be they are just saying anything so the press doesn’t go nuts right now, or go even more nuts than they are already. But I doubt it. It’s hard to picture any of these wackjob policies being reversed, I guess time will tell.
