ROSEVILLE, Mich. (WXYZ) - Did you know you could get fined for heating up your car? One man's parking ticket has gone viral, with thousands of views after he was ticketed for heating up his car in his own driveway.
Taylor Trupiano says he's still shaking his head over a parking ticket he got on his own property.
"I thought it was some kind of joke at first, and then I was thrown back by it," he said. "I was really surprised."
The ticket was for leaving the keys in the ignition with the motor running and no one around. Trupiano said he was only doing something many people in Michigan do during the winter.
"I was in and out in probably about 7-8 minutes," he added. "So in that amount of time he ran up here, gave me a ticket and by the time I got out he was nowhere to be seen."
Frustrated with the ticket, he posted a photo on Facebook where he racked up thousands of comments and shares.
The Roseville Police Department ticket comes with a $128 fine. There is no state law against leaving your car turned on and unattended, but dozens of cities across Michigan have local ordinances.
"We have five to ten cars stolen this way every winter," Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said. "It's dangerous, and of course it drives everyone's insurance rates up. It drives our crime rates up."
Many of the ordinances will allow you to use a remote start because the vehicle is locked.
Berlin tells 7 Action News they will not apologize and in fact, he encourages his officers to enforce this law.
"It's common sense. We can't warn everybody of the law there is. Common sense says you don't leave your car running unattended," Berlin said.

Is it common sense to sit in a freezing cold car while it is heating up, when you can make your breakfast instead.
That goes without saying. Like, having an armed private security and complaining about too many guns in the community. Rights for me and not thee.
What if the doors were locked?
I don’t believe sitting in your car will avoid the fine. You will still be “idling”

FYI my auto ignition only allows my car to run for 5 minutes. EPA reg. This is not long enough to defrost my windows in the morning. In other words it is a useless accesory
A friend of mine in Seattle actually had his car stolen exactly this way. However, it was one of those classic early 80’s or late 70’s cutlass style cars that was all the rage for the while and it was in great shape - and most importantly he lived in a bad neighborhood. i.e. he was dumb to do it.
But the dumb ordinance is dumb. It’s the wrong solution. It takes away such a basic freedom: Property rights. Your vehicle is on your property and the cops have the right to step on it and ticket you in your own driveway.
The principle of the whole thing is just plain unamerican. And I rarely use that word. Come to think of it, this is the only time I think I’ve ever used it.
So the police officer wants people to drive around in a car that is zero degrees and not properly defrosted.
This could have been handled better, maybe give a warning notice for the first two incidents. The car owner made it worse with his rude attitude, and Officer Berlin needs to resist the urge to publicly push back on being criticized.
All said, I suspect that county will revisit the topic of how these calls are responded to.
The police seem to be overreacting here.
I doubt such a law is equally enforced for all citizens, regardless of income.
