Fish as Smart as Apes?

by Jeffrey P. Tomkins, Ph.D. *

Evidence for Creation

Since evolutionary thinking permeates the entire spectrum of biology, scientists are consistently surprised by the mental abilities of creatures thought to be lower on the so-called tree of life. In this mythical tree of evolutionary progression, apes are thought to be at the top of the intelligence scale—second only to humans. But now we have numerous examples of other land creatures, most notably birds, that rival or exceed apes’ mental capabilities.1-3

But what about fish, the supposed ancient ancestors of all land-dwelling animals? With such a low position on the tree of life, they can’t be nearly as smart as apes—can they? Perhaps a few captivating and evolution-negating examples are in order.

Wanda: Oh, right! To call you stupid would be an insult to stupid people! I’ve known sheep that could outwit you. I’ve worn dresses with higher IQs. But you think you’re an intellectual, don’t you, ape?

Otto West: Apes don’t read philosophy.

Wanda: Yes they do, Otto. They just don’t understand it. Now let me correct you on a couple of things, OK? Aristotle was not Belgian. The central message of Buddhism is not “Every man for himself.” And the London Underground is not a political movement. Those are all mistakes, Otto. I looked them up.

When dolphins and apes start building dolphin condos and ape apartments, then I’ll think they’re smart.

If fish are so damn smart, you'd think they'd've learned by now to spend more time studying how to outwit bears instead of apes.

Fish can be smart. I had an outdoor fish pond for several years. My older fish were fearless. They liked to swim into the palm of my hand and let me ‘pet’ them like you would a dog and they took pieces of fish food from my fingers. They were so tame that they would stick their faces out of the water and sniff the snout of my Jack Russell. That could have been really stupid but after one lip-locked him the JRT was afraid of the fish, not the other way around.

Heh, heh.

Of course there's going to be the person who was born without a funny bone who will point out that whales are mammals and not fish.

I hate those people.

Evolutionist Stephen Jay Gould criticized the “just-so” stories of evolutionists. Charles Darwin himself told just-so stories. Turn-about is fair play. There is no reason why creationists should refrain from telling just so stories.
