What did they try to do ? Insist on voting without ID, or ID that was not on the list of acceptable IDs ? Or did they try to vote twice, in person even though they’d sent in an absentee ballot, or what ? Enquiring minds want to know.

All of the above, but not all at once. We had people try to vote with no ID, we had people try to vote with the wrong kind of ID (in those cases we steered them toward ways to get the right kind of ID, we even had pamphlets we could hand out). We had people try to vote who couldn't prove where they lived, we had people try to vote in the wrong district (in which case, we printed out the address where they needed to be). We had people who, after being told they couldn't vote due to one of the above, tried to use the argument "But I was able to vote at this other polling place!" in that same election. (Which was our first clue that another polling place was slacking off. Always the same one. We reported it to the City Clerk, but it was in a different city, so she couldn't do much.)

I don't think we had anyone try to vote both in-person and absentee, but I was in a different room than where they would have gone for that, so I wouldn't have seen it.

I know at least one felon tried to vote, but he was honest enough to say so on the form, so we gave him a list of things that needed to happen for him to get his voting rights back, most of which were up to the court.

We had one guy try to register his mother to vote, even though she had dementia so bad she didn't even know who he was. We're pretty sure he was trying to steal her vote, but she didn't have ID or proof of residence, so we were able to block him.

After it was over, I wrote up a suggestion that all same-day registrations should be processed as provisional votes, and the deadline for provisionals extended so that residency could be verified. We'll see if anybody listens.

One good thing about the polling place here is that the poll workers cover every possible part of the political spectrum. That means the rules get followed, no exceptions. It made it downright hilarious during the primaries when someone tried to fabricate an incident. Mom can tell that story, though :)

Yeah, he was a piece of work. The kicker? He was a former election inspector. So, he expected us to let him through without providing his full name, his full address, and viewing his ID. So he called to “report” us to the authorities for blocking his vote. When the police officer came to write up his report, it just happened to be the officer that Mr. Important had some history with: at a previous election, the officer had stopped someone for speeding outside the polling place, and Mr. Important tried to frame him for harrassing a potential voter. The officer, of course, was completely professional. :-)
