In response to the recent election fiasco, progressives are increasing their efforts to control the internet. They are targeting fake news. Since no one is in favor of fake news, this should be a clear winning strategy. Progressives can portray themselves as the defenders of democracy and free speech. At the same time they will be able to eliminate some troublesome competitors who might question their own reliability.
The forces arrayed against the powers of falsehood are formidable. They include heads of state, internet providers, major news organizations, and a myriad of private groups. President Obama proclaimed, There has to be, I think, some sort of way in which we can sort through information that passes some basic truthiness tests and those that we have to discard because they just dont have any basis in anything thats actually happening in the world. This is a curious statement since truthiness is defined as the quality of seeming to be true according to one's intuition, opinion, or perception without regard to logic, factual evidence, or the like. Angela Merkel told the German Bundestag, Opinions aren't formed the way they were 25 years ago. We must confront this phenomenon and if necessary, regulate it."

We saw during the election that Liberals are the biggest purveyors of fake news on the planet.
That’s right; Obama’s “success” and Hillary’s “qualifications” were fake news. Even many low-information voters saw through it, and either voted Trump or stayed home...
Exactly. And they always project on conservatives the crimes that they themselves commit.
They sure are
I’ll admit, the Leftists have good imaginations and strategies in pursuing their agenda. In this case, demonizing truth by calling it a lie.
Jesus said that the sons of darkness are wiser, in their generation, than the sons of light.
I’m already tired of the all “Fake News” notices being added to headlines. It’s even more annoying than “Barf Alert” or “Must Read!”
I’m an adult. I will decide my own opinion on the news.
If they are going to shut down “Fake News” outlets then I guess that’s the end of the New York Times. Put the Gray Lady in hospice where she belongs!
Expect to see a push to have only “licensed” news sources.
If the recount removes Trump, expect it to happen within sixty days.
‘Hate Speech’ is a leftist invention that is used to suppress speech that they don’t like. ‘Fake news’ will become a tool for censorship. Facts and free speech threaten the left. With their own brand of Newspeak, they’re promoting their own Orwellian society.
Ja wohl, Frau Obersturmfuhrer! Ich bein ein chrome dinette!
The Ministry of Propaganda wants to be the sole purveyor of fake news.
Most of the so-called real news is faked news in reality.
The Arab spring, for example, was basically a prelude to a bloodbath and the spreading of terrorism.
Climate change hysteria is a never ending series of faked images and anecdotal references that are meant to mislead people into drawing conclusions that are not true.
Most of the coverage of President Obama has been transparently false and there has been no effort made to discover the real truth.
The media’s version of truthful reporting about the Clintons is the gold standard of disinformation.
Putin is represented as another Stalin which is quite a distortion, while Angela Merkel, who appears to be insane to many, is shown as a wise and courageous, steady leader.
All of this is total nonsense. Against that, the occasional lapse into embellishment from alternative media is rather trivial. And just because alternative media sometimes get things wrong does not mean those who are aware of them are misinformed. I don’t necessarily take as fact anything that any media or internet sources report. I do my due diligence and try to verify all that I hear from whatever sources I can find. And we should all be able to understand what things we cannot fully know, and be able to place those in a “for later consideration” file that is otherwise unresolved. For example, I don’t really know if there is any substance to the allegations about Clinton Foundation being involved in child trafficking. But I am not willing to accept any blanket denials of this charge from one side, nor any insistent calls to accept from the other side.
All will be revealed in the fullness of time.
Since my work involves research in climate, I have a better than average chance of sifting through fact and fiction in that field, and there again, I have found that the discourse from both sides is borderline crazy talk. There is no runaway warming. There is no good evidence for there being more severe weather events (some evidence of a reduction). But on the other hand, a new ice age is probably not around the corner either. As unsexy as it may sound to both the media and the alt-media, the climate is probably just boring old steady state and going nowhere.
How ironic that the newly-discovered semantic term, “fake news,” itself, comes from the mouths of purveyors of years of the truly fake news of “hope,” “change,” and a counterfeit ideology calling itself “progressive.”
They are targeting fake news.
Where have they been for the last 40 years under a rock.
Debate is the key to democracy. This should be the only rallying cry of the Right which is to force the Left to engage in an exchange of ideas. The one-sided portrayal of issues by those who control the media discussion and education must include equal time and respect for opinions.
Fake News is loaded with MSGs and synthetic hormones!
Perhaps they should start with all those fake news shows on Comedy Central, the ones so many liberal youth regard as real and from which they get their news and attitudes. Next they might want to check into SNL which STILL has people convinced that Sarah Palin said “I can see Russia from my house.” Then to wrap up, they can look at the talk shows that spew so much propaganda, including the late night comedy monologues that endeavor to make a laughingstock of any conservative person or cause.
