(CNN)It's been a bad couple of weeks for Democrats.
And if President-elect Donald Trump's early staffing choices are any indication, the next few years could be considerably worse. Come January, the Democrats will be entirely out of power in Washington for the first time in a decade.
But while the immediate future seems full of inner conflict and rearguard actions to preserve political and social norms (to say nothing of President Barack Obama's legacy), there are still at least a handful of reasons for Democrats to feel grateful this holiday season. So put on those rose-colored glasses, lefties, and put down the wine -- for now -- and consider these few reasons to smile.
1. There is very little -- almost nothing -- left to lose!
Here is how Bernie Sanders assessed the Democrats' predicament during a post-election rally on Capitol Hill: "When you lose the White House to the least popular candidate in the history of America, when you lose the Senate, when you lose the House, and when two-thirds of governors in this country are Republicans, it is time for a new direction."

2. Demographics!
3. Traditionally liberal policies are popular
(Oh, yeah, the election returns prove that, LOL.)
4. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren
(Series?)
5. Twitter
6. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote
(Waaaaah....Waaaaah...)
7. Obama has sky-high approval ratings
(Just like Hillary?)
8. And his legacy won't be as easy to undo as some people think
(BWAHAHA, just watch!)
9. Sheriff Joe is out of work
(Yeah, but President-Elect Trump is about to start working!)

Just 18 more Governorships and Statehouses and a handful of Congressional seats and DemocRATS will have no worries at all!
Don’t forget HuffPo, Kos, and the DUmp...if you buy a membership, that is. And NPR and PBS...so far.

10. We saved the country from near certain death.
11. People are facing up to reality of things not always going their way.
12. Nut jobs are getting called out on their bs.
13. Anti-american traitors are getting their just desserts.
The right tolerates the left, in part because the right respects the Constitution. The reverse, however, is not the case. Marx said a society has to crawl through capitalism before it can walk upright in communism. He understood the vulnerability of a free society that would never take the harsh steps necessary to eradicate political opposition.
14. “Wait til next year!”
Hell, wait till after he's out of office. His approval ratings will be over 100%.
Yeah. Until President Trump names him to head the INS.
I will say this about Bernie, though - if your party lost the Presidency, both Houses, and 2/3 of the Governors' offices in the country, it might just be a time for a little reassessment...

We’re thankful for Twitter since it played an enormous role in Trump’s election. Hard to believe they’re thankful for it, too.
Time for a new direction. I agree with Bernard.

And don’t forget in 2 years most of the Senate seats up are democrats — many of which are vulnerable.
There are 18 of which we need just 8 to secure a filibuster proof majority in the Senate provided the Senate does not end the filibuster which they should day one.
