Tuesdays election results sent shock waves across the globe after voters selected President-elect Donald Trump as the 45th president but the results may not have been as surprising to Americas rust belt.
Trumps message on jobs, trade and the economy resonated in battleground states that turned red for the first time in decades. Trump was able to take in a good number of rank and file union members who usually vote Democrat, even though many union leaders threw support behind former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Clinton still beat Trump by eight points among union households, but that number is 10 points lower than the union household support Obama received over Romney in 2012, according to a Fox News exit poll.
Trump took the rust belt, including Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
Labor leaders voiced their support for Clinton at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia this past summer, despite significant support for the Republican nominee among the labor ranks.

They screwed rank and file members just as GOPe screwed grassroots conservatives.
Union membership in the private sector has been in a long-term decline anyway, so I’m not sure how much influence they even have anymore.
On FLOPS News Sunday one of the commentators said that Bill Clinton repeatedly told the campaign not to forget about white working class people and was ignored or laughed at.
Turns out he was quite correct.
For once in his life, Michael Moore was absolutely right.
So, I am an active UAW member, never voted democrat. Here in my neck of the woods, west Michigan, the best paying jobs are mostly union. We do not see ourselves as stooges, in fact, I take offense to being refered to that way. Most of my family is or was union at one time or another. It ain’t rocket science to know that you cannot work in Michigan without some contact with union folk.
You are indeed correct. I don’t mean to disparage all union members as stooges and dems. I know there are lots of conservative union members but you gotta think you are outnumbered nationally.
Private sector union members know that they are screwed if their jobs continue to go overseas. They are getting replaced by illegals, and if the unions try thug tactics against the Hispanics, that the Hispanics have their own gangs to push back.
Meanwhile, municipal union members are starting to understand that a bankrupt local government means that their pensions are at risk.
Content to be an underdog fighting for right. No pun intended.
In theory you can opt of the dues part that goes to politicking (Fed. Law) but some people at union HQ will not be happy and you maybe paid a visit.
thanks.
I didn’t know that.
I should have done my research first.
Thanks again.
That would change if Electoral Votes would be awarded by Congressional District. Nevada has six EVs and four CDs, so one for each district plus two for the popular vote winner. Worst case scenario, Las Vegas delivers only a max of three EVs instead of six - and some day those six might be crucial.
Now do that for every state in the Union and the Democratic Metro lock on EVs is broken.
The Nevada governor is a Republican and they hold the majority in both houses, but probably not enough to ram it through.
Ah, perchance to dream.
2016 ends up with:
Senate 11-d and 10-r.
House is 27-d and 15-r
