Krebs on Security ^ | Oct. 16, 2016 | Brian Krebs

Posted on 10/21/2016 3:13:03 PM PDT by snarkpup

A massive and sustained Internet attack that has caused outages and network congestion today for a large number of Web sites was launched with the help of hacked “Internet of Things” (IoT) devices, such as CCTV video cameras and digital video recorders, new data suggests.

Well that is just dumb to even suggest that fully patched devices are somehow immune. Krebs on Security is either dumber than a box of rocks or they don’t care about insulting my intelligence. I have read that most of devices are wide open to hacking no matter what. They have virtually no security at all.

I wonder if Smart TV’s are used for these DNS attacks?

I would be concerned about any consumer product with the word "smart" in the name.

The internet of things is a great source of “tools” to use for such a DDoS attack. Death by a thousand cuts per se ......et cetera et cetera.

Messing with the small daily comforts has a more immediate in your face effect than the necessary big picture confrontation.

Kardouchian family lardbutts and fans be sweatin' big time relating to that.... LOL!

Chainsaw got a workout this day..... taking down some dead trees in preparation of a new garage. Didn’t notice the DDoS here in poohville till I came in for a beer break. Looks like DNC havens got the brunt of the hit.

I think it mostly depends on whether or not these things are open for remote management. I know my TV is open to accepting requests on the for UPnP display usage. I don’t think it’s open for management. Who knows what kind of exploits there might be of its web connectivity that would allow hacking it remotely, though. Mine’s behind a firewall, but many aren’t.

Too old to carry a chainsaw into the Eastern woods, so my trail cutting gear has to do for DIY trimming.

shears I usually leave, but that nifty light weight Fiskar saw has a home in my pack.

From the article, they are out there with default UID/passwords that are not easily changed, or even thought of being changed by the end user. Who new your fridge can be enlisted into the cyber army.

Computer and network security are a big part of my daily work. Oracle released the new Java 1.8 Update 111 a couple days ago. All of my computers with Java installed were updated. The ones supporting my work were particularly painful as Atlassian and the Jenkins software distribution come with a JVM integrated, but never patched or updated. The preferred approach is a system wide JAVA_HOME. That way one update covers everything.

I took it seriously but when McCain and Flake won’t listen to us about anything else, why bother?

I agree completely but I don’t see how those of our part could have taken it more seriously. None of those who should have cared were interested for some (probably crooked) reason I can’t fathom.

Obama was determined to give the internet away. Obama is trying to do as much damage to this country as possible before he leaves office and this is just part of it.

Obama was born sown into a sack of hate.

You do realize that Fiskars is probably a globalist. I mean, I love their garden stuff. I got some gear driven loppers that are rugged and work well. And the tools you showed look equally good.

21 days after Obama sold internet, As first salvo in Hillary and Obama's cyber attack on Russia, USA suffers major DDoS attack shuts down major communications.

I fixed it for you. Hillary and Obama have promised to respond to the Russian hacking they say has happened by responding with their own cyber attack. Apparently they did, knocking out DNS servers in the USA.
