Designated Survivor: Should it be designated as Democrat propaganda?

Patricia McCarthy: Too soon to know

Anyone who read Tom Clancy's novel, Debt of Honor, published in 1994, has most likely wondered why it was not made into a film long ago. It is a gripping novel, written long before 9/11. The book tells the story of a Japanese man whose parents were killed at the end of WWII. He plots his deranged revenge by becoming a pilot and ultimately flying a jetliner into the Capitol building during the State of the Union address. In that book, his main character Jack Ryan, from his books Hunt for Red October, Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games, etc., is the "designated survivor."

It is this book that is the likely kernel of the idea for the new television series, Designated Survivor, a Kiefer Sutherland venture very similar in vein to his long-running series, 24. In this program, he is a lowly cabinet member who is catapulted into the presidency when every other person in the government senior to him is killed in a catastrophic event right out of Tom Clancy's novel.

The swearing-in

After only two episodes, there is something unnerving about the show; where is it going? It could be good; or it could be a work of anti-American, pro-Muslim propaganda. It is too soon to know.

It is an absolute myth that after 9/11 Muslim Americans were targeted for violence by "bigoted" Americans. In fact, there was no backlash against Muslim citizens; this was a trope of the Left, convenient as it fit into their worldview but an outright lie.

The guy is the HUD secretary. When has this position ever been held by a true conservative?

Yea, I’ve already cancelled my DVR recordings of the series. Had the stench test.

Really tried to watch first two episodes. Not enough to maintain interest, and certainly a far cry from “24”; not even close.

ABC television - doesn’t it go without saying it’s propaganda?

The author of this article is incorrect.

In Debt of Honor, Ryan is about to be wore in as the new VP and is waiting in another chamber, he was not the designated survivor. When the plane crashes into the Capitol he barely escapes the resultant flames. The swearing in occurs very early in the next book Executive Orders.

My wife and I watched the first but decided the series only has one purpose and it is not entertainment.

The author is concerned about the direction of the project. Given that Kiefer ended the 24 series by converting Jack Bauer into a muslim, the author is justified.

It was apparent by the second episode with the evil white Governor of Michigan rounding up Muslims in Dearborn and Obama-lover (literally) Kal Penn playing the ‘brilliant young speechwriter’ accosted by DC police over racist profiling of potential Muslim terrorism. Vomit.

They also made mention of JFK sending in the national guard against racist Henry Wallace to force integration...no mention of Eisenhower or Faubus.

Only slightly less ham-handed about it than Madam Secretary over on CBS.

This excellent review is spot-on. I had high hopes for this show but, after the first two episodes I am already DISAPPOINTED with the direction it is taking. The villains in the world of this show are likely to be conservatives and the military.

What a waste!

I watched some of it, he’s neutered by his wife and family and pretty much no one likes him except his right hand gal. Then they immediately show the military in a bad light and I changed the channel.

ABC television - doesn’t it go without saying it’s propaganda?

Once ABC cancelled Forever after the 2014-15 season, I vowed never to watch a 1st or 2nd year run of any TV ABC spits out. Based on what I am reading about Designated Survivor, I am glad I have stuck to that pledge.

But the thought of having our entire presidential, congressional, and judicial cast of characters instantly disappear from the face of the Earth does have some appeal, discounting the list of some quality individuals (short list as that may be).

Second episode I said “I see what you did there”. Still, I was a huge 24 fan (and I hate almost all tv shows) and I will probably continue to watch.

Thank you for posting this! I was hoping someone would post about this show (I don’t know how to start a post). Anyway, I thought the first episode was “meh” and the second you could just see the “Democrats good/Republicans bad” coming from a mile away. No thank you.

One can always watch the British movie version staring John Goodman.
