NASHVILLE — Jean Shepard, “the grand lady of the Grand Ole Opry” who had a long recording career as an influential female in country music, died Sunday, according to an Opry spokeswoman. Shepard was 82.

Spokeswoman Jessie Schmidt said in a news release that Shepard had entered hospice care last week and died in Nashville.

“The Opry family is truly saddened by the news of Jean’s passing,” Opry vice-president and general manager Pete Fisher said in the statement. “Although we will miss Jean’s presence on the Opry stage, she has left us the wonderful gift of her music which will be remembered for generations to come.”

No reason given, she has been looking very sick on Larry's Country Dinner for the last year, was not on the last show, which is taped 3 months in advance. She will be missed.

Probably shows more being out of the music scene I guess... but this guy came to mind... (past in 1999, autobiographical author of A Christmas Story)...

We had a chance to see her perform several years back. She gave a really good show. I have always enjoyed listening to her.

Remember her singing Slippin’ Away, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mx60hCsSjQ

We watch RFDTV’s Country’s Family Reunion and got to hear Jean sing many times.

So sad. Her greatest hit, in my opinion, was “Satin Sheets”.

I went to Nashville twice back in the mid 1990s and went to the Opry both times. Got to see Jean along with Hank Snow, Bashful Brother Oswald, Porter Wagoner, Grandpa Jones, Bill Monroe, and Little Jimmy Dickens, among many others. Feel glad that I got to see those legends in person who are now in “Hillbilly Heaven” with all of the others.

RIP Jean Shepard. We enjoyed her singing over the years and recently when she appeared on the RFDTV channel.

Satisfied Mind; one of the best country songs ever, I believe her version was the first one to be charted. Porter Waggoner sings a great version too.

Don’t remember Jean Shepard doing Satin Sheets, many did, but Jeanne Pruett was the one who made it so famous.

Don’t feel bad. I also thought of Jean Shepherd, the humorist. Met him when he spoke at our college in the 70s and he was a great guy, on and off stage.

Then I remembered that he died a number of years ago.
