People who drink very hot beverages may increase their risk of developing cancer, a new investigation by the World Health Organization (WHO) has found. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer agency of WHO, said last week that it classifies very hot beverages as "probably carcinogenic to humans." ... Specifically, drinking beverages at or above 149 degrees Fahrenheit (65 degrees Celsius) can cause cancer to develop in the esophagus, the IARC researchers wrote in their article, published June 15 in the journal The Lancet Oncology.
"Clearly, more research will need to happen in the coming years to understand how thermal injury of the esophagus contributes to cancer formation," Stern added.

When is comes to science and especially cancer research, somebody is always looking for more $$$$. Sad but true.
Instead of putting money into finding out what causes cancer, let's put it into cancer cures... After all, who cares how you get it, curing it is the important part. Everybody has the potential to get cancer, live long enough and you'll likely get some form of it, but living this way or that way is not the answer. Developing curative measures is. Hopefully, they won't get another red cent to find out why we get it... This sort of research is about as useful as trying to determine why the sun comes up every morning. Who cares?

Citing the UN World Health Organization is the layman’s equivalent to citing Wikipedia as the one authoritative source of knowledge.

Then the Chinese and Japanese would have a huge amount of these types of cancer.
They love to drink very hot tea, they know the temperature is right when it burns your stomach in the morning when it is empty.

As soon as this study gets funded, someone else will come along with a theory that hot beverages decrease the risk of cancer.

The cause of cancer, in a nutshell, is a weakened/compromised immune response. The paths to that are infinite, therein all this nonsense “science”.

As a reference point, I just made a cup of oolong tea. It had steeped on the counter for 5 minutes and then I stirred in some honey and sat down at the computer. Curious as to how hot my tea was at this point, I found it came in at 130 degrees. I could have a low tolerance for heat, but it’s just drinkable for me - still rather hot. So the temperature they are describing in the article is REALLY hot!
Since cancer often has its beginning in chronic inflammation it would seem reasonable that a throat being subjected repeatedly to liquid at such a temperature would be in that state.
