Tariffs for taxes are fine. Tariffs for a brand new country like Washington’s America are fine.

But tariffs to “protect” the greatest, wealthiest, and strongest nation on earth are STUPID.

No one can answer how tariffs on air conditioners coming from Mexico will keep Nabisco from moving. They can’t answer it because there is no answer. Tariffs have NOTHING to do with why companies are fleeing America. Tariffs never were nor never will be the answer because tariffs do not address the CAUSE of business fleeing America to begin with which is THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

What drives business elsewhere are higher costs (and, therefore, higher prices, and, therefore, lower demand) forced on business by federal minimum wage, federal regulations, federal protection of unions, and high federal taxes. Get rid of those things, and America will be in a competitive position with the rest of the world just like she used to be before the feds got their ugly mitts on our economy.

It would be nice if you knew what you were talking about and who you were talking to. But you make no argument or hardly a coherent reply.

Nevertheless, I’ll try you.

Tell me how tariffs on Carrier air conditioners coming from Mexico will keep Nabisco from moving.

I has to do with a concept called "Profit Margins". Sometimes the simplest answer is the right one.

Saying that Mexico won’t pay does equal Mexico not paying.

Mr. Trump was not lying ... because there was no discussion.

I agree. If Mr. Trump didn't respond to the Mexican President saying "We will not pay for the wall" then there was no discussion. It was just a comment.

The Mexcian media was calling their president weak so he put out a tweet 2 hours after the press conference. Who waits 2 hours to correct the record? It’s an obvious lie.

Does that mean we need to wait about deporting the illegals until after the wall is finished? If we deport before the wall is finished, what money will be sent that we can charge a fee?

Meanwhile, the truth of the matter is we the American people will end up paying for the wall though higher tariffs and prices on imported goods.
.........................................................
Wrong. I think the wall will be paid for through the renegotiation or cancellation of NAFTA. Mexico will pay for it one way or another and nobody really cares how. As far as tariffs are concerned, the truth of the matter is we need to use tariffs as a weapon and not forget that tariffs built this country. A major cause of the Civil War was that Lincoln did not want to lose the Tariffs the southern states brought in from foreign trade.

Tariffs properly used level the playing field and promote COMPETITION. Remember that word which is at the heart and soul of a free economy. COMPETITION. You can go ahead and spend American Dollars buying Chinese junk, but some of us prefer MADE IN THE USA.

You are looking at the situation with half a brain. Funny how you totally disregard foreign states SUPPLEMENTING the production of products undercutting American products. Think about China devaluing her currency to undercut our production costs. You have one shoe on, so put the other shoe on and take a balanced look at the problem. Yes we do need lower taxes and far less restrictions, rules and regulations, but we need additional weapons...like tariffs...to use when the other side doesn’t live up to their agreement and in other words CHEATS without us doing anything about it. That has been going on far too long.

Tell that lying SOB that if he doesn’t stop saying they’re not going to pay for the wall, we’ll make ‘em pay double, triple, how high does he want to go?
....................................................

That is NOT going to gain anything! Mexico is our next door neighbor. Building cooperation through our MUTUAL problems is how Trump is going to solve the border problem. He has taken the first step in that Mexico’s President acknowledges that the wall will go up. AT THIS POINT it does not matter whether he says Mexico will pay for it or not. TRUMP will negotiate a way for the Mexican president to SAVE FACE and yet wind up, one way or another, paying for the wall. THAT is in the future. Cooperation with Mexico can happen with this president. It could not happen with Vincent Fox who played Bush like a violin. Fox is null and void now. Trump is dealing with a new president who has enormous problems. Remember you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar. Trump knows what he is doing. Stop trying to outguess him or think you’re on a level to give him advice. Trump is the expert on the art of the deal. Shut up and let him do what he does best.

The Mexican government doesn’t have to, a small tax on all the money being sent home will easily cover it.

“Tariffs tax the many to support the few. Which few? Politicians decide.”

That’s true for all taxation.

“It’s equivalent to a dollar devaluation and decrease in living standard.”

No it isn’t. Jobs leaving the US decreases living standards.

“And it we don’t have the politicians or government of 1790 anymore.”

Very True. The high taxes aren’t or can’t be paid, the US is no longer the “land of opportunity”.

I only mentioned it because so many “conservatives” are “freetraders”.

Marx was a “freetrader”, he clearly stated it was a great way to destroy a country’s economy and culture.

He was right.

I read that Trump also said “make Mexico great” which is a BRILLIANT idea as it would be mutually beneficial to both sides, however, it will be a monumental task.

It is so obvious they will pay one way or the other. Are people really mental midgets they can’t figure it out.

Agree.

They just don’t want to admit that he will take a business approach to this, not the usual governmental “ our hands are tied” no care what it costs as they just use other peoples money ( our taxes) to fund anything they fancy.

“But tariffs to “protect” the greatest, wealthiest, and strongest nation on earth are STUPID.”

It’s not. And you’re not thinking.

Like in 1790 when George Washington “protected” US Shipping from the British, spurring a great ship building boom, yuge jobs, money, wealth were created in Boston, (better than any gov “public works” program), a tariff on OPEC oil would spur a YUGE oil boom in this country.

Yeah we’re the “greatest , strongest, etc” on earth, but OPEC is NOT freetrade. It’s a cartel, it’s fixing prices for their benefit, for our disadvantage.

With fracking we have more reserves than anyone, we need to allow the millions of jobs, revenue, prosperity to happen. Tariffs are the only way.

Same with China, no freetrade there, we’re their 3rd world raw material supplier.

George Washington = for tariffs.

Karl Marx = Freetrader.

You (and others here) may want to re-think your position.

Am I the only one who knows that Mexico is not going to shrink wrap a pallet loaded with cash and sent it the US? Or write us a check?

According to wiki we GAVE Mexico 560,600,000 in foreign aid in 2013. We'd nip that in the bud for a start. Trump has said as much.

Media trying to make hay out of Mexico won't pay. Morons.
