El Shahaby was being prudent. A photograph of him shaking hands with an Israeli Jew could be a death sentence back home in Egypt.

Also, what does that say about Egyptian (or Muslim) society, in general? Yet one more (out of many) reasons more people in the West don’t want these sickos making al-hijra to the West.

Well, I’m thinking the handshake offer was “extracurricular”, i.e. an initiative of the Israeli competitor. This might suggest that the Muslim Scum was within his rights not to respond to it. I was led into this thought by the comment about “bowing” in the article. I took Judo lessons, and I do remember bowing, but not handshaking.

I really thought the Egyptians had gotten past this hatred being endemic and cultivated by the elders. When their President Sisi threw the former Muslim President Morsi in jail and crushed the uprising of radical islamics, I thought that trend of enlightment would continue. I guess not all at once.

No excuses. He is a high profile international figure. He knows that shaking hands with an Israeli Jew is a death sentence, or worse.

Before Morsi etc, I recall in polls of muslim nations, Egypt was one of the more anti-American (which I take as a marker of general radicalism) ones.
A couple Italian women got tied to shoot-off for the gold and silver. Kim Rhodes and two others were in the shoot-off for bronze. After two rounds Kim won! So she has medalled in six straight Olympics - most of any woman Olympian, and tied with some guy.
You could tell that her younger competitors looked up to her - even those that beat her. They did the European fake kissing on the cheek to each other. Odd I thought, but I guess customary.
