At a time when Muslims all around the world are terrorizing and slaughtering non-Muslims in the name of Islam, Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, continues trying to distance Islam from violence. Last Sunday a journalist asked him about the recent and “barbarous assassination of Fr. Jacques Hamel” in France, and how the priest was clearly “killed in the name of Islam.”

Possibly, probably. However, I look at it from a perspective of him paying protection money to the Muslims in a way.
In order to stop destruction of church property (and assets), he feels if he appeases that cult, they will leave the church alone.

were the Scriptures ever to have captured this individual within its texts, the portrayal would not have been kind; the leader who tells his people their faith is basically worthless, not deserving of their time and effort...
contemporary catholics are going to have to make hard choices after this papacy, if the subsequent election yields someone of this ilk (or worse)...

I think the most frightening thing about what he said is the equivalence of Christians with the unregenerate within his flock, followed by the equivalence of people who commit crimes of passion with people who carry out horrendous acts of premeditated terrorism against entire populations.
