How Does the FBI Watch List Work? And Could It Have Prevented Orlando?
Wired ^ | 6/17/2016 | Kim Zetter

Posted on 06/19/2016 6:32:18 AM PDT by mac_truck

Of all the details investigators have uncovered about Orlando terrorist Omar Mateen, perhaps the most infuriating is the fact that he spent 10 months on a government watch list, yet had no trouble buying an assault rifle and a handgun.

Authorities placed Mateen on a watch list in May 2013 after coworkers at the Florida courthouse where he was a security guard told authorities he boasted of connections to al Qaeda and other terrorists organizations. He remained on the list for 10 months, and FBI Director James Comey told reporters this week that during that time the agency placed Mateen under surveillance and had confidential sources meet with him.

But the feds removed Mateen from the list in March 2014, after concluding that he had no significant links to terrorism beyond attending the same mosque as an American suicide bomber who died in Syria. “We don’t keep people under investigation indefinitely,” Comey said, adding that he doesn’t see anything that his agents should have done differently.

Comey didn’t identify the list Mateen was on, but an unnamed official told the Daily Beast that he was in two databases, the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment database and the Terrorist Screening Database, more commonly called the terrorist watch list.

Besides, the FBI needed to make room on the lists for the most dangerous national enemy...white, Christian, hetero, male patriots!

These watch and no-fly lists are incapacitated by ignorance, stupidity and political correctness. In theory they should work, but in practice they are corrupt beyond compare.

Years ago, the FBI determined that the dossiers it kept on suspects and those of public interest, especially celebrities and opinion makers, needed a clear divide between the “raw files”, full of unsubstantiated information, and the verified files of accurate and confirmed information.

(Because they were indifferent to the truth, but instead wanted scuttlebutt, gossip and innuendo they could use for political purposes, the Clinton White House obtained hundreds of raw FBI files of its political enemies. President Nixon had almost been impeached over obtaining a single raw file, but Clinton got a pass.)

In any event, the current watch and no-fly lists are an incompetent mess, impugning thousands of innocent people yet ignoring serious threats to our security. They need to be completely reordered and rationalized, without nonsense additions or corrupt removals.

And this must be done in the absence of political correctness. It is an Intelligence-Law Enforcement activity, not a political one.

I found it interesting that most of the people on the FBI’s terrorist watch list aren’t Americans.

As Trump would say...get them out of here!

None of the government will protect us as long as it is headed by an usurper. There are Muslim Brotherhood operatives at every level, put there by the usurper.

Children of foreign nationals are NOT natural born citizens.

Odungo is responsible for a very large part of it.
His policy of “wiping clean” a great deal of info
gathered by DHS personnel is pure lunacy

Watch list vs. get off your butt and do something list. Have you seen that commercial with the bank being robbed and the security person says he’s not a guard but a monitor? That’s exactly what the feds are these days. Ack, no, the monitor guy at least admits there’s a problem whereas the feds can’t be bothered to do that.

Yes, it was. Thanks for posting.

I often wonder if the authorities would even allow their various watch lists to be used as disqualifiers for firearm purchases out of fear that people who are being actively investigated might be tipped off.

No watchlist can work if the agency creating it believes that Islam is a benign and peaceful ally we should cultivate friendships with.

they are incapable of connecting dots because they are blind to dots.

Obama has done everything in his power to make sure that muslims are a protected class in the U.S. and that islam bears no link to acts of violence. This has included scrubbing references to trigger words merely linked to islam, instructing DOJ to prevent the profiling of muslims by the FBI, and indeed placing muslims in positions of power in the command structure.

It appears that FBI agents refused to investigate Mateen more carefully because to do so could/would be a career ender.

Trump has an opportunity here to destroy the Democrats by zeroing in on Obama and Hillary/Huma.

It no longer matters whether Obama is a practicing muslim. He has done so much to further the cause of jihad that his actual faith is irrelevant.

These lists are almost pure kabuki. Keeping a list of peeps they are not monitoring 24/7 is a quarter-assed approach.

Fire the CIC and staff who’ve created policies that protect terrorists rather than arrest them.

Not only that, but what about alerting them when they can’t fly or buy a gun? I mean I suppose it would stop the mouthbreathers but the ones who are really serious would presumably never put themselves in that position if they thought there was a chance their name is on it.

I’m still trying to figure how this terrorist who was making death threats and all the problems he had was allowed to be in security?! Even with taking guns away this murderer would’ve been one with the guns.

It probably would work very well if Obama would allow it. He is the one hand-cuffing all the authorities actions, and the “conservatives” in the legislature go right along with it.

Wired magazine was instrumental in instigating the “purge” of terrorism information from intelligence agencies.
