“Why are you in Casa Blanca?”

“I came for the water.”

“There is no water in Casa Blanca.”

“I was misinformed.”

Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds?
Captain Renault: I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!
Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Captain Renault: Oh, thank you very much.

That said Olivia de Havilland is still alive. If she makes it she will turn 100 this year on July 1st. Ironically in GWTW her character of the 4 major lead roles is the only one that dies yet she has outlived virtually everyone in the movie in real life.

Was she the character that Rick may sure her husband won money at the table? If that’s her, I must have missed that she had jilted him.

I know he helped Bergman and her lover out.

Casablanca is only rated number 33 by IMDB which is much too low in my opinion.
However, most of the movie goers of today probably never heard of the movie itself and have no idea when WWII was fought and by whom.

It was supposed to be the Horst Wessel Lied, the Nazi Party song. But the Horst Wessel Lied was copyrighted, and to show the film in neutral countries, the studio would have had to pay royalties to the Nazis. So it was changed to Die Wacht am Rhein, which long predates the Nazis and was public domain.

Scarlett is a multi-faceted character and Ilsa is a good woman and far from being a bitch.

Scarlett’s a bit of an anti-heroine. In the course of the book, on the plus side, she saves her home, provides for her family and servants and starts a successful business. On the down side, she’s has no scruples in achieving her aims. She’s admirable in many ways. Rhett is her counterpart - he, too, is unscrupulous but also highly intelligent and opportunistic. It’s really a wonderful book.

I’m still confused. Ingrid Bergman played Rick’s former lover.

Oh I remember her now. Thanks for the pic. She is the one who walked into Rick’s with some German soldier. During the singing of La Marseillaise she got a beautiful close up.
