Mexico changes its tune on Trump
The Hill ^ | May 4, 2016 | Rafael Bernal

Mexican officials are focusing on the positives in the U.S.-Mexico relationship, avoiding direct references to the presidential campaign.

In an interview with The Hill Monday, Secretary of the Economy Ildefonso Guajardo said "it's not very convenient for foreign officials" to comment on U.S. elections. He said they will instead focus on the massive economic potential of the U.S.-Mexico partnership.

"The mere fact that Mexico has become an item in the debate should be an opportunity to reinforce the U.S-Mexico relationship. In a way, underlying that reality is the fact that whatever happens in Mexico has an impact in the U.S. That in itself is good," said Guajardo.

The Mexican government has traditionally avoided commentary on foreign elections, but as Donald Trump heightened his rhetoric against immigrants and about building a border wall, several high officials took the bait.

The secretaries of Finance and Foreign Affairs called Trump "ignorant." in March, President Enrique Peña Nieto compared Trump's rhetoric to Mussolini and Hitler. And in April, Guajardo himself said Mexico would always be the United State's largest trading partner, unless "Trump wins the election."

But later that month, the Mexican federal government overhauled its diplomatic corps in the United States and unveiled a new strategy centered on improving the country's image with its northern neighbor.

"The Mexicans have mastered one narrative: economic modernization. They haven’t figured out how to master a narrative of political modernization in terms of democracy," said Michael McCarthy, a U.S.-Latin America relations expert at American University in Washington.

Trump needs to ask Hillary if when she said the "Whole World" was hoping she would beat him in the election if that included Mexico?

Then ask Mexico to clarify?

What “relationship” is it when 30% of your populace decamps to the country next door?

Sorta like the relationship between the Visigoths and Rome, or France and Germany in 1939?

The US needs to have the same immigration laws as does the Mexicans.

I’d get a kick out of an announcement that ‘we’re overhauling immigration law and making it like more enlightened countries. Our immigration law will be more like Mexico’s’.

Go ahead and call us racists. I dare you.

There is no reason why the United States can’t shore up it’s border, build the wall, stop illegal immigration, and yet still have a good relationship with Mexico.

I have always thought that the best way to help Mexico would be to encourage U. S. Companies to invest in Mexico, do business there.

Start with fast food places. Change the menu to something the Mexican people would like, and create lowering paying jobs at first. As those jobs became prevalent, then get other more middle-income supporting jobs there.

Pretty soon you raise the standard of living for all the communities, and their economies take off. They become self-sustaining working and product consuming societies.

You don’t send U. S. jobs there. You create jobs there.

The U. S. could always have been a better influence on the Mexican economy. This is how to go about that.

It’s about damned time too.

I don’t wish the Mexican people a bad life. I want their lives to improve. We should all want that.

The Mexican government should as well.

We already sent them thousands of jobs and in return they sent us millions of illiterate illegal immigrants.

All open borders for illegals advocates should be hanged. If I were president, I would peruse that cause. I would see to it that no federal funds go to sanctuary cities and I would have those mayors arrested for treason.
