Bill would make Obama’s birthday a state holiday

A bill introduced in the Illinois House would make Aug. 4, President Barack Obama’s birthday, a state holiday.

State Rep. André Thapedi, D-Chicago, and three other Chicago-area Democratic lawmakers are sponsoring House Bill 4654, which was filed on Feb. 2. The legislation would make Obama’s birthday a legal holiday, meaning state offices and schools would be closed.

From the bill:

“The fourth day of August of each year shall be a legal holiday to be known as Barack Obama’s Birthday to be observed as a day on which to hold appropriate exercises in commemoration of our illustrious President. When August fourth shall fall on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be held and considered the holiday.”

If passed by lawmakers and signed by the governor, Obama’s Aug. 4 birthday would become the 14th official state holiday. The legislation also would establish a commemorative holiday known as mayor’s day, in honor of late Chicago Mayor Harold Washington and Richard J. Daley. That holiday would be observed by Chicago Public Schools on March 4, though schools in that district would stay open.

Obama, who has his own problems with a divided Congress, will be in Springfield next week to address the General Assembly where he is expected to speak about bipartisanship. Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic legislative leaders remain deadlocked over a budget. Illinois is now eight months into the current fiscal year without one.

Just what Illinois needs, another day devoid of anything worthwhile. A phony holiday commemorating the very phony birthday of the biggest phony in the country. There is a pretty good example of why the state is rated junk in the finance world.

Don't see these law makers jumping thru hoops to get his birthday a state holiday.
