Faith and the 2016 Campaign

The conventional wisdom in American politics has long been that someone who is not religious cannot be elected president of the United States. Most Americans have consistently said that it is important to them that the president have strong religious beliefs. And a new Pew Research Center survey finds that being an atheist remains one of the biggest liabilities that a presidential candidate can have; fully half of American adults say they would be less likely to vote for a hypothetical presidential candidate who does not believe in God, while just 6% say they would be more likely to vote for a nonbeliever.

Among presidential candidates, Trump seen as least religious. On the other hand, the share of American adults who say they would be less likely to vote for an atheist candidate has been declining over time. Moreover, one of the candidates who is widely viewed by Republicans as a potentially “good” or “great” president, Donald Trump, is not widely viewed as a religious person, even by those in his own party.

These are among the key findings of a new Pew Research Center survey conducted Jan. 7-14, 2016, on landlines and cellphones among a national sample of 2,009 adults.

Indeed, in the eyes of the public, being a nonbeliever remains a bigger drawback than having had an extramarital affair (37% say they would be less likely to support a candidate who had been unfaithful), having had personal financial troubles (41% say they would be less likely to support a candidate who had had financial struggles), or having used marijuana in the past (20% would be less likely to support a former pot smoker).

I would want someone with a fairly well versed theological sense, though he or she wouldn’t necessarily have to be an every Sunday or Saturday Christian or Jew.

But I would never, ever vote for a muslim.

Hillary and Bernie more religious than Donald? On what planet? Granted, he is apparently a religious illiterate; but I believe his heart is fond towards Christ and that he is responding to an inner call. May God continue His work in the man.

A man who has never asked for forgiveness from God and doesn’t feel that he ever needed to isn’t likely responding to an inner call from God.

Had you ever had one yourself, you would know that isn't true.

You just see what you want to see. Never mind the evidence to the contrary in front of you.

He says what you want to hear, it doesn’t match his past, so it must be God calling him...

Never mind he’s seeking your vote because he wants the office and has a long history of doing what it takes to close the deal...

I see that it’s not my place to judge another’s journey; and it’s not your place, either.

Bullshit! This is a false claim that I’m getting very tired of and should be addressed head on.

I’d have little interest in Trump’s journey or “calling” if he wasn’t seeking the highest office in the land. He is asking for great power and authority granted from us, the citizens of this country.

We have every responsibility and it is “our place” to judge his core principles, truthfulness and authenticity before granting him such power. We are ultimately response what he does in our name.

Where did I curse you?

As far as classy goes, well you guy’s headline right now is:

“TRUMP ROARS: ‘BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF THEM” “SUE HIS ASS OFF!”

So really, just operating at a similar level you seem to understand.
