Media coup: Drudge poised to overtake CNN

A report that looks at where online news readers go for their daily scoops shows Matt Drudge, who operates the popular headline aggregation site that's a must-read for many of both political camps, is gaining big on massive media organizations like NBC and even CNN.

The latter, specifically, might want to take notice. CNN has spent the last few years loudly proclaiming its dominance in the news market, even as competitors like Fox News - and now, Drudge - have gained steam.

MediaPost, in its "10 Publishers Account for Half of All Online News," cited SimilarWeb and found "the top 10 publishers, together owning around 60 news sites, account for 47 percent of total online traffic to news content last year, with the next biggest 140 publishers accounting for most of the other half."

Still, as Politico reported in mid-2015: "The Drudge Report is the leading source of referral traffic ... for many of the top news organizations in the country ... In 2014, DrudgeReport.com was the No. 1 site of referral traffic to the Daily Mail, CNN, Fox News, Roll Call, Breitbart, The New York Times, National Journal, USA Today, Associated Press, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal and Politico, Intermarkets found. Another unique aspect for Drudge is that 87 percent of its own traffic is from readers going directly to DrudgeReport.com and staying there for an average of 30 minutes."

In other words, CNN and other news sites wouldn't have the high page view numbers they have were it not for Drudge.

But that's not all...

A lot of the “traffic” is probably automatic reloads. I hate those when trying to read the page.

I actually look at it two or three times a day for breaking BIG news. I’ve got it where it loads up very quickly now as opposed to going to somewhere like Fox or CNN etc.

It’s just a good collection of links and recent goings on that eventually get splashed everywhere.

Drudge invented the idea of the internet news aggregate.

Not a huge fan of the website but I sure wish he would bring back the radio show

Here is a great aggregate

That stuff stopped when I enabled IE ad-track blocking as an add-on function.

If I’m in the mood to check out the top news, I go to Drudge or FR.

In that order.

ONE MAN, a former gift shop clerk.

I really, really hope this bugs the living hell out of them.

One year at the Columbia School of Journalism costs $85,000 and Drudge is EATING THEIR LUNCH..!

Why? It’s a great ad-limited, efficient place to get a take on what’s breaking and hot?

Even better than one man, he apparently always has an employee or two to share the burden.

Without Drudge, Rush and JimRob WHAT would we do..?

Our country would be LOST.

In high school Drudge was a loner Geek with few friends but just look at all that he has done.

I like Drudge and check if frequently. Been doing that since 2004 at least.

When you see the “cheesy” rotating red & blue police light, you know something big is happening. ;-)

Twitter has taken over as the real time news source. Even Drudge uses it to post stories before he can update his website.

It's because Matt provides the links of stories that are not in the "main stream news"........ Matt is usually one of the first, and forces the CONTROLLED ESTABLISHMENT SELL OUT RATS in the Media to talk about things they do not want to. For instance, the very first was Monica Lewinsky. Plus you get Matt's take on the news with the headlines to the links. Like this one below.

Maoften find that his sole act of changing news headlines to his own words improve the story vastly. often it adds a funny or insightful dimension.

I also find that his periodic posting of photos is highly meaningful and often has hidden meaning or makes for a double entendre.

sometimes he will post a photo for which there seems to be no story and then in one or two days there is a major story that makes the original photo much more meaningful.

In the early days of freeRepublic Matt was responsible for recruiting maybe 1/4 or one third of our total membership simply by giving one one tiny link to us.

In a couple cases I believe that we have influenced Matts reporting but it is unquestionable that he has had a huge impact on Free Republic.

Not many people realize that Matt appeared in person at the March for Justice a long time ago and he met many of our members.

I feel certain he drops in here from time to time.
