"I'm a maniac and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat and ugly, and Ben, you're a terrible surgeon," Senator Ted Cruz of Texas said to rival Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, as the debate opened, saying he had now "gotten the Donald Trump portion of the program out of the way."
Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who has been a frequent target of Trump's attacks, said he "kind of missed Donald Trump," adding: "He was such a teddy bear to me."
Trump was able to garner a tremendous amount of attention on Thursday without having to share much of the spotlight. Cable news networks CNN and MSNBC provided extensive coverage of his event.

This was an Amazing Event! Thank You Donald J. Trump! You just made America GREAT Again with this focus on our Vets and Wounded Warriors! Trump runs on RED WHITE and BLUE!
Elephant in the room.
No, not really. The serious candidates were debating.
I think he was mentioned 3 times, 2 of them by the moderators.
Might have missed a mention or two.
Chickens in a yard debate better.
Pretty slimy teddy.
I’m so glad the serious candidates were debating.
Meanwhile I watched a wonderful rally where $6 million plus was raised for our vets. It was so much more heartwarming and real than any debate imo.
We’ve heard at least six times what the candidates positions are, I’m sure they hit them again tonight. Oh, did they even mention vets?
For our vets? You seriously believe that?
Meanwhile, back at the Vet ranch...
Trump brought it to the attention of the audience that Fox news was very nice, they apologized to him, asked him to come back to the debate, but, it was 5 min. before the vet show was to begin and that he had to do the vet show. He wanted to be at the debate, but he committed to this other show (the vet thing).
Wise choice. He didn’t pretend. He didn’t spread a bunch of phoney mush out there.
You mean the 'serious' candidates who can't get over 2% in the polls?
Real serious......
There were backhanded mentions of him, not by name.
“Elephant not in the room”, to quote Megyn Kelly.
Yeah, such serious candidates polling at 10%. /drippy-drippy-sarcasm
Trump was smart to sit out this debate. For any hits he got he'll respond tomorrow on Twitter.
But more than that, Rubio and Fox hurt Cruz. He's bleeding right now and I'm betting he wishes Trump was at the debate to take heat off him. And, short of that, I'm betting he wishes he too had sat it out.
That video montage Kelly showed (and they probably had a different one for Trump but couldn't use it), followed by Rubio's passionate, rapid fire accusations had Cruz on his heels.
It was unfair as hell and that's why Trump was not there.
Rubio up 3 points, Cruz down 4.
Paul up 3.
Surprisingly, and thankfully it does not matter, but Bush up 3.
All from the undecideds except for Cruz's loss.
It was a bunch of talk-talk about who supported what and when. Boring. Kaisch met a Belgian guy once on his dad’s mail-route. Or was it milk route? I can’t get it straight. Sounded like a bunch of boring old men.
“Debating” in this case means jumping thru the pre-determined hoops held by the Moderators and speaking and shutting up when they are allowed to. That’s not “debate”, it’s an ad-supported television event.
Trump on the other hand, paid the bill himself, including a $1 million donation to veterans, had the time of his life surrounded by friends, family, amazing warriors, and even two competitors.
If the goal was to score debate points, then Jeb probalby won, especially if he threw in a little Spanish lingo
IF the goal was to win hearts and minds of voters, Trump walked away with it.
Just look at Drudge, he’s not even asking “who won the debate” anymore.
Kasich came across as one who could hardly wait to start making deals with the Demonrats to “get things done.”
