I was watching Bernie Sanders speak last week at a town hall in Bedford when an early intuition became a conviction: Take Mr. Sanders seriously. He is not just another antic presence in Crazy Year 2016. His rise signifies a major shift within the Democratic Party.
*** “Let me disabuse you,†Mr. Sanders says to those who think he cannot win. He quotes New Hampshire polls, where he’s way ahead. He can defeat Donald Trump, he says.
Then the meat. He described America as a place of broad suffering—“student debt,†“two-job families†with strained marriages and insufficient child care, “the old on fixed incomes.â€
We can turn it around if we make clear to “the billionaire class†that income inequality “is not moral.†The economy is “rigged.†Real unemployment is not 5% but twice that. “Youth unemployment is off the charts.†He wants job-training programs for the young. The minimum wage is “a starvation wage.†Raise it to “a living wage—15 bucks an hour.â€
*** A conservative of a certain age might say: “No, he’s a fad. Socialism is yesterday! Marx is dead, the American economic behemoth rolled over and flattened him. Socialism is an antique idea that rocks with age. America is about the future, not the past.â€
I disagree. It’s back because it’s new again.
For so many, 2008 shattered faith in the system—in its fairness, usefulness and efficacy, even in its ability to endure.
As for the young, let’s say you’re 20 or 30, meaning you’ll be voting for a long time.

I saw the dumbest thing today on Facebook. A friend of a friend who commented that she’s for socialism. It could work, it just never has worked before because it’s only been tried by fascists. Same a communism. I was astounded. i did not comment since I didn’t know the person and did not know the person in common all that well.

Socialist governments killed 100 000 000 people during the last century. Think of what they could have accomplished if only the right people had been in charge.
Sanders could win. Especially if the GOP nominates another loser type candidate -— need we say more? Sanders is more honest than O ( which obviously ain’t saying much) and Bernie doesn’t hate America like O. But I believe Sanders’ political views are almost exactly wrong for USA — and especially now that O has driven America, our economy, our defenses, and our alliances down so far —we very much need someone who can help us recover-—but yes, old Bernie ( unlike Hillary the Liar) could win quite easily against the wrong R’s. all this is meant to say: we discount old Bernie the Red at our own peril!! At least that’s what I’ve tried to say several times — nobody likes hearing it and do I get flamed. But it’s gotta be said. It’s quite possible the D party bosses will realize almost nobody wants Hillary shoved down their throats again. The D party might just wake up and retire her. Then, watch out folks — Bernie can campaign pretty well and he doesn’t come with Hilary’s bad bsggsge
Some kind of overseeing heaven has been respected by all governments that have been successful at anything beyond repression. Quite often it is Christianity, but not 100% of the time.

My 31 year old (stupid) nephew insists that “Democratic” socialism is different than the “old” socialism. I said “pig...lipstick”. It’s all semantics. His generation has been indoctrinated very well!
