Ted Cruz and Donald Trump threw down over the birther question. Cruz was ready for Trump and blew him up by pointing out that by his own standard, Donald Trump wouldn’t be eligible to run for president because his mother was born in Scotland.

Cruz got a question about Trump’s birther claims. Sen. Cruz pointed out that Trump said his lawyers examined Cruz’s citizenship, and it is a non-issue. Cruz delivered the line of the night, “Since September, the Constitution hasn’t changed, but the poll numbers have.” Cruz said that the birther theories that Trump has been relying on require two parents to be born on US soil, which means that Trump would be disqualified because his mother was born in Scotland.
Trump responded by saying that he is leading in the last three polls in Iowa, and the Cruz is going down. Trump cited Lawrence Tribe and other constitutional attornies who say Cruz can’t run. Trump said that he already knows that the Democrats will be filing a lawsuit about Cruz’s citizenship. Trump said, “There is a big overhang. A big question mark on your head. You can’t do that to the party.” Trump said that you had to have certainty.
Cruz responded that he has defended the Constitution in the Supreme Court and that this lawsuit has zero chance of succeeding. Cruz said that Trump is parroting attack lines from Hillary Clinton.
Sen. Cruz has proven to be the only other Republican candidate to toe to toe with Trump.
The Republican establishment should be very afraid because the only person that stand up to Trump on the GOP side is Ted Cruz.
Trump hasn’t ever read the Constitution that much is clear.
Did you notice that during Donald Trump’s stirring defense of New York conservatism, he didn’t throw out his own name in evidence?
I’m getting there, Cal, but we have to support the nominee. Or turn the country over to the really evil.
Excuse me. This is a Cruz thread...
"How stupid are the people of Iowa?"
I don’t think we’re denying reality.
It’s obvious Trump is ahead ... now. His rallies have become events that everyone wants to go to ... like some rock concert.
But ... going by my own feelings here ... Trump does not wear well. I liked him and loved his smashing through political correctness. No matter what happens we owe him a lot for that.
But the longer I knew him the less I liked him. He was just plain cruel to a good dude, Ben Carson.
And his tacky use of this birther thing to discredit Ted Cruz when he sees Ted gaining a little.
Trump people like this apparently. They call him a fighter and they’re glad he’s mean.
I don’t trust him anymore.
Ted Cruz is not an Arab prince.
FYI, I have ALWAYS believed in birth right citizenship, and I support Trump, despite his flaws, because I think he is big enough and forceful and old enough to actually the begin the hopefully not insurmountable process of dismantling the terrible govt we now have, and put a stop to this massive invasion along our southern border, and all of its concomitant problems.
I think, after a life time of putting together huge business undertakings, he has the know-how to undertake the logistics of such, as well as the big powerful charismatic presence to take-own and overcome the media.
I’m not blind or stupid, I know he is going to do some things I don’t like — just as Ronald Reagan did. But I think Mr. Trump will keep this country from falling completely apart, and that with the destruction of the powerful elites in Washington, there will be the opportunity to elect solid constitutionalists in the future, who can un-do whatever minor damage that Trump may do, and more importantly build upon the great good that he will do.
Personally, I was not aware that Cruz was born in Canada. I thought his situation was the same as Obama’s, only a little better because his father became an American citizen. However, looking at what a disaster Obama has been, even though Cruz is a good guy, I think it would be in our country’s best interest to return to what the constitution has mandated regarding eligibility for the presidency, with some small clarifications by congress, as they did in McCain’s case: An child born to active military parents or parents serving in the diplomatic service of this country, should be considered as being born on American soil.
Otherwise, we run the risk of putting God-knows-who if we continue watering down this requirement as we are doing. Never again, should a candidate no better qualified than Obama be allowed to run for office, even if he is a good guy such as Ted Cruz. No exceptions for the liberal Democrats, no exceptions for conservative Republicans!
I am, too. Cruz or lose!
I think your reasons not to vote for Trump if he were to get the nomination are somewhat weak. Now, my ideal ticket would be Cruz/Palin, but that’s not going to happen. I’m hoping for some combo of Cruz and Trump. I will vote for the nominee unless the GOPe jack around with the convention and overrule the will of the people.
If you broaden the Constitution to fit Ted Cruz you have now just allowed an Arab Prince to run for POTUS. He has part of his residency requirement fulfilled since he graduated from Harvard.
One caveat, he may be disqualified if anyone can find the formal renouncement of his mother’s citizenship. If they can’t, Arab Prince can be POTUS.
Come to think of it..that same scenario about formal renouncement of American citizenship would apply to Ted Cruz. I will take him at his word that his mother didn’t do it.
But the questions that come up about Ted Cruz are the same ones that come up with the direct descendant of The Great Prophet who is an Arab Prince.
New York, New York--home of such fine conservative constitutionalist patriots as John V. Lindsay, Chuck Schumer, the Cuomos, Herbert Lehman, Jake "the snake" Javits, Michael Blomberg, Bill De Blasio and Vito Marcantonio.
I’m as worried about an Arab prince becoming president as I am about the sky falling.
And yet, that same mentality got your 8 years of Obama who clearly hates America and has as his right hand an Iranian.
Do you think those kids hiding under their desks from the Russkies in the 50s ever foresaw someone like Obama getting elected with an Iranian by his side?
Yep. Hearing a lot about it today. Very memorable.
Show the papers.
Period.
As for the rest, it's your usual baloney. Do you cultists even have the slightest idea how crazy you sound defending this disgusting piece of scum?
"All Rump is doing is pointing out how this might be used by the Democrats. He isn't saying it's true." Horsesh!t. That's nothing more than a slimy dodge to pretend you aren't saying something you know perfectly well you're saying. If a Clinton were doing this you'd call it exactly what it is: vile. Trump is every bit as low as the Clintons are; you're being conned and you're too caught up in cult of personality to see it.
So, what. My lawyers could claim I’m a purple porcupine.
