Michael Savage prevails at U.S. Supreme Court (Talk Radio "free agency" case)

The U.S. Supreme Court denied a petition Monday to hear an appeal by the Talk Radio Network in a lawsuit brought by host Michael Savage.

The denial of the petition leaves in place the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in July upholding a federal judge’s decision to release Savage from a contract with his former syndicator.

“After many, many years and over a million dollars of legal fees, justice has prevailed, Savage told WND. “TRN has never paid me one dime of the money they were supposed to pay me.”

WND requested comment from TRN but did not receive a response immediately.

Mike walked us listeners through it on the air yesterday. Very complicated. I would have benefited from a good flow chart. Mike seems to thrive off of these extended ground wars with representatives of the bureaucracy.

It must have really chapped the ass of the 9th to rule for Savage :-)

This was a landmark case. Many talk radio talent will benefit from
this case.

Let’s hope that Mike Savage never sues Mark Steyn, it might create a black hole or something.

Pretty much the talk radio version of Free Agency )if I understand it correctly).

So Savage was promised something in the event they dismissed him, and they welshed?

yep... or if like the Star Trek episode... if Savage sued Steyn, it would be creating anti-matter... the Universe would implode.

glad to hear this... Savage is hugely entertaining.. and right much of the time... I agree with him a good 70 to 80 % of the time...

With your handle, I hope you read the thread a few days ago where we were supposed to figure out which Dickensian character Donald Trump would be. I cited Martin Chuzzlewit for my suggestion. Great book!

It was like an ugly divorce. TRN owed him money, but did not want to pay. Both wanted out.

I’m not a Savage fan at all, but I’m glad for this ruling. (I can only handle about three hours a year of his show, I’m put off by his repetitiveness and his coarse disrespect for callers he disagrees with.)

My vague understanding of the case is that he had offers from other networks for more money or better time slots, but Talk Radio Network wouldn’t match one or another of the particulars. Wasn’t he off the air for a while because of his protest?

I like the analogy with the Free Agency ruling in the Curt Flood case. The conventional wisdom was that free agency would destroy the game as players would flit from team to team and the fans would lose interest, and the players would be out of work. Instead, the greatest boom in baseball revenues occurred.

Talk radio is merging with podcasts, though, and I have no idea how they’re making money on the podcasts I listen to. Everything is morphing faster than I can keep up.

I’ve been listening to Savage more and more over the last few months. If given a choice to listen to any show now, Savage might be my first over Rush, Mark and Hannity (have to admit Hannity has gotten a little boring and tired.) Mark tries to say Savage only talks about meatballs. He wishes.

Savage mentioned this. Report: TRN's Mark Masters Arrested For Domestic Assault January 13, 2016 at 5:42 AM (PT) - See more here

IIRC a lot of listeners share in the good news.. those who contributed to a defense fund for Dr. Savage.

hahhh...that is a hard one.. Trump as a Dickensian character. I honestly would have real trouble with that one..Dicken’s characters were often of two types, good or nefarious.

Mr Micawber, does come instantly to my mind, from David Copperfield. “Davey, something will turn up!”... he was a very cheerful character... and eventually something did turn up for him and his family..
