Many of the city's residents already complain that the sounds are like a war zone on New Year's Eve. Imagine how that might affect asylum seekers who have just escaped from real wars.

Several European capital cities canceled or cut back their New Year's fireworks. They didn't want large crowds to attract terrorists. Germany's capital, Berlin, was not one of those places. Huge crowds gathered there, a sign of confidence, although it also had a side effect. Berlin has become home to refugees for whom the crackle and boom of fireworks triggers disturbing memories. NPR's Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson reports.
SORAYA SARHADDI NELSON, BYLINE: The sharp pops and loud booms that go on all night can send even hardiest souls into a panic. Fireworks of all kinds are flying everywhere - shot from rooftops, out of windows and on the streets. It sounds like a pitched battle, and I've seen a few. For people like Inana Alassar, who fled to Berlin to escape war, the effects can be paralyzing.
INANA ALASSAR: Like what's happening now, for instance. I get nervous, and I don't breathe so good. And I start sweating, and I open my eyes like crazy, and I don't know. And I sometimes cry.
NELSON: The young Syrian woman is working as my Arabic language translator on this night. And she isn't the only migrant gripped by fear or experiencing flashbacks.
Mental health professionals here estimate up to half of the million asylum-seekers who came to Germany last year suffer from depression or have post-traumatic stress disorder.
Psychiatrist Gis Rochow volunteers at a refugee camp in Berlin. She handed out earplugs and posted flyers explaining the noisy celebration that was coming.

People here knock NYC but every year they have a huge celebration in Times Square and it goes off without a hitch. No capitulation to terrorism.

Bringing millions of mentally ill people into a nation to collapse the infrastructure is really smart. That and that mentality of good is evil and Slavery is Freedom-—the socialist and muslim worldview of “freedom” will replace the Western worldview of Christianity (Reason/Free Will)-—which, of course, as Solzhenitsyn stated—even a little bit of Socialism will rot the Soul.
The Soul of France is completely rotted-—we are seeing the ‘Last gasps” for sanity-—but there is no possibility of Reason/Logic when the Western worldview was eliminated from their mass indoctrination systems (skooling).
We are literally seeing Europe disintegrate and become a fascist hellhole where there is no possibility of Freedom except for the few elite sodomite masters who dictate everything to the ignorant masses (slaves).
They need complete irrationality in the masses (dumb, ignorant useful idiots for nation suicide)....totally emasculated, immoral males.
But I think you missed my point - whatever failings NYC has, its police and security are top notch. Even that idiot mayor has to go along with security measures. And we should celebrate, I think, American strength and bravery over Europe’s cowardly cusses. And then, forget NYC. Did any other major city refuse to celebrate the holiday? I’ll beat they didn’t!

I do not like crowds & avoid them, but watching the New Year’s celebration in NY I can’t help feeling the energy & excitement of everyone. Seems like one gloriously giant party for people who enjoy that. Party on!

Whine, whine, whine. Aren’t these same people whose culture typically celebrates almost anything (weddings, funerals, birthdays, a trip to the market, etc.) by randomly firing guns into the air?! This is ridiculous.
Why not just leave. Go back to where you came from and push the button like a good muzzie.
I think you do Times Square once in a lifetime and then avoid it like the plague. It’s a young person’s thing. But people come from all around the country and the world to hang out. And we’ve never had a problem. That makes me proud to be American and a NYer.
I can agree with that.
