Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) spent two days with almost 300 pastors at a West Texas ranch Monday. He already has the endorsement of leading evangelicals like Bob Vander Plaats and Focus on the Family founder James Dobson thanks largely to his pro-life credentials and anti-gay marriage efforts.
Yet, not everyone is convinced that Cruz's spirituality is sincere. Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump seemed to take an indirect swipe at the senator's Christian credentials during a campaign event on Tuesday:
"Just remember this - you gotta remember, in all fairness, to the best of my knowledge, not too many evangelicals come out of Cuba, okay?" Mr. Trump said at a campaign event Tuesday. "Just remember that…just remember."
Trump went on to flaunt the support he's received from notable Christians like Franklin Graham, the son of Billy Graham, one of the nation's most admired evangelical ministers.
"Franklin Graham said incredible things about me the other day," Mr. Trump said. "We have so many pastors and so many ministers in favor, and it's just very important to me."
It's all well and good for the businessman to be speaking so highly of his evangelical support, but is it appropriate for him to question his opponents' spiritual lives? Cruz, after all, is not the only Cuban American in the 2016 race. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) also shares that title. Additionally, with these comments, Trump is alienating all Cuban Americans who consider themselves Christians. Will they feel compelled to vote for a candidate who doubts their faith?
In August, Trump was asked to name his favorite Bible verse. He couldn't.
"Just remember" that.
If this is the hill Trump chooses to die on its fine with me. But if he’s as smart as some claim he should be starting to sense the brewing storm this is inciting, especially in Iowa, and back off this crap.
He’s got some nerve, quite frankly, challenging anyone’s faith. Anyone with half a brain could see he faked his way through the “favorite Bible verse” question and his support has practically taken his irreligiousity as an acceptable loss ever since. Now he’s going on the evangelical tack, in a nakedly desperate attempt to court the Iowan evangelical vote?
Like I said he can show some smarts by shutting up about it now. Or this will be his Waterloo.
The Trump haters have established a pattern to fight him. Will it succeed?
(Dig out an old quote - even if it was a media lie - or, even if Trump’s answer was already accepted in the past. It starts the media attacks as if for the first time. It’s like a ‘dance of the elites’.)
Really Donald? How many times has Cruz been divorced compared to you?
But none of Trump’s wives worked in the Bush White House, either. So I wouldn’t be bringing up the subject of wives if I were you.
-— , not too many evangelicals come out of Cuba, okay?” Mr. Trump said at a campaign event Tuesday. “Just remember that -—
He’s great at ridicule AND innuendo. He has it all!
Trump is the ‘shoehorn’ that could get Cruz in. Don’t destroy Trump; Cruz will need him.
Cruz isn’t even Cuban. He is of Cuban descent, but that’s no reason to question his personal belief in God. That’s like saying I can’t be a protestant because my French ancestors were Catholic. It’s a silly insinuation to make— especially coming from a Christmas and Easter “Christian” like Trump.
We going to post this like how many times today, 100?
“”Just remember this - you gotta remember, in all fairness, to the best of my knowledge, not too many evangelicals come out of Cuba, okay?” Mr. Trump said at a campaign event Tuesday. “”Just remember thatâ¦just remember.””
These idiotic comments are getting mighty tiresome. We’ve gone along with him trashing the same things that we trash but he is getting downright rude and annoying. How about this, Donald - “Ted Cruz DIDN’T COME OUT OF CUBA.” Do I need to repeat that as he does everything he says?
I don’t have that much patience left after putting up with the bozo in the WH all these years. I like this from a recent email:
“”Never, in this country, have we experienced how much stress one man can cause a nation of people - on a daily basis!””
I agree with your comment:
“”Like I said he can show some smarts by shutting up about it now. Or this will be his Waterloo.””
“Bush White House”
Oh, that’s a cardinal sin now? How many Conservatives today were affiliated with the Bushes? Are they all suspect as well? The two situations are incomparable. Divorce and working for the Bushes not even in the same category. It’s not even about his wives, per se. It’s about the fact he dares to question Cruz’s morality while he is, in fact, a serial adulterer. Trump needs to shut his yap and focus on the real issues.
“We” are going to post what exactly, 100 times today?
Welcome to the new FR.
Dupes, reposts and “I searched but it didn’t come up” are the new norm.
Along with FReepathons that last nearly 90 days.
I miss the old Free Republic.
I agree with you....
Cruz is just as American as Trump ,,,,, a stupid assertion at best and I look for more stupidity from the Trumpster as there seems to be an endless supply of childish , sophomoric , nonsense erupting from him . The petty attacks need to stop , stay on message and try to have a little more mature and dignified attitude to the office of the presidency . This is not the “ VIEW “ or some game show he’s auditioning for .
Isn’t Trump Episcopalian? I wan’t aware that he was evangelical.
You do realize he repeated this on Tuesday?
This posting.
Yeah, I think he’s going to turn off some folks if he keeps up this mantra. Up til now, he’s been running a flawless campaign.
