A newborn king does not want the gift of drum music. Trust me.

The Little Drummer Boy is a bigger villain than the Grinch. The Grinch at least has some sort of heart-size condition and soul-gunk problem that he can blame for his lack of basic compassion. What excuse does the Little Drummer Boy have for his behavior? None.

The Little Drummer Boy is just a plain old jerk. Specifically, the kind of jerk who insists on telling us about a time he showed up at a party without a gift and made everyone there miserable by playing what he thinks was a sick drum solo.

But he cannot just tell us. Instead, he constantly interrupts his own narrative with twee drum noises so that it takes longer.

I agree entirely. This is one of my least favorite Christmas songs. Dave Barry once describes it as "a bunch of people standing around saying pum."

I love all the Christmas carols, whoever sings them ....but this one song can get me out of the Christmas spirit faster than seeing hilLIEry’s face.

In my version of the little drummer boy, the young shephard is about to give his drum as a gift, but joseph as a fast thinking father, suggests he just play a short piece for the babe, instead of joseph having to hear jesus banging on the drum as he learns...

Mary nods because she totally agrees that a gift of a drum is never a good idea for new parents’ children...

The young shephard keeps his drum, and later, when herod’s men are searching for jesus, the drummer boy distracts them by playing his drum... Sadly he is killed by the soldiers.. Pa rumpapum pum.

Thanks you - I almost dropped out of the choir when we sang this a couple of years ago.

Nothing in this song makes any sense.

The little drummer boy is an awful story and song. The Christmas story is more than compelling enough without adding fictional characters.

I’ve always loved this song, but to each his own.

It could have been worse. It could have been triangle boy and everyone singing ting-a-ling ling.

There are Christmas songs that drive me absolutely round the bend every year, and this is one of them. Ranks up there with Springsteen howling “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” (dear God!) and “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”. Don’t even start me on “Do They Know It’s Christmas” or I may have to take a fire ax to the next group of carolers who cross my path. I GOTCHER FIGGY PUDDING RIGHT HERE!!!

Agree. Should have soothed the baby Jesus with bagpipes.

“Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”

That song is so bad. “A Wonderful Christmas Time” is horrid as well. Then there is “Last Christmas”. They have literally nothing to do with Christmas at all. You could substitute “Halloween” or “Valentine’s Day” into each song and glean more meaning out of them.

Say what you will, it beats the hell(that’s a drum joke son) out of Lennon and McCartney’s Christmas crapola.

I still maintain that the recording studio rolled tape on Bruce as he was passing a kidney stone.

A sinless babe might understand what a mere mortal couldn’t. That said, there is nothing biblical vouching for or against this, and so it remains a fantasy, perhaps a parable. Why should people get all upset over such a thing? Why can’t they try to get the point? It would not have become so well accepted if there had been no reason, if there had been no way it touched hearts for generations.

Stringbean tirelessly and repeatedly proving he can’t carry a tune in a bucket...he just hollers...off key.

First time I heard him (having just arrived on the East Coast) I thought: “Great band, who’s the a-hole that thinks he can sing?”

"Perhaps" a lie.

Either way, it sucks massive pond water.

This kind of show isn’t the same thing as The Little Drummer Boy, however. It isn’t even in the spirit of Christmas. It is in the spirit of “Me-mas.”

Often it’s image that carries these stars. People see something in Bruce they want to idolize, and a halo forms around him in their eyes.

Be that as it may, he IS a part of Americana for better or worse.

It would be a lie if it ever purported to be historical. Which it does not, and probably could not be.

Sometimes spiritual imagery is cast out with the details. Should every illustration a preacher uses also be called a lie because it isn’t a literal recitation of something in the bible? Should we not understand how the entire creation, if not what the world has done with it, reflects the glory of God which glory (His, not the creation) deserves our fullest worship?
