The United Auto Workers (UAW), one of the largest unions in the United States, has struck down a vote by a local chapter to join the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.
UAW Local 2865, which represents student workers on University of California campuses, had voted last year to join the BDS movement. The UAW International Executive Board reversed that on Tuesday, stating its âunanimous beliefâ that BDS âespouses discrimination and vilification against Israelis and UAW members who are of Jewish lineage.â
Informed Grads, a University of California student group whose appeal of the boycott resolution was accepted by UAW International, praised the union for its âlandmark decisionâ rejecting the âone-sided, counterproductive BDS referendum that limits academic freedom and promotes discrimination based on national origin.â
âThe anti-Semitism and active promotion of hate that ran rampant throughout this BDS campaign cannot and must not be tolerated,â said Informed Grads member Karra Greenberg. âWe applaud UAW International for taking a firm position against BDS and discrimination based on religion or national origin.â âWe are very pleased by United Auto Workers International Unionâs forceful rejection of BDS, which sets a powerful precedent for other labor unions and national organizations,â added Scott Edelman, a lawyer representing Informed Grads in its appeal.

And on a side note, how in the world did those gibberish characters end up in the excerpt?
God Bless the United Auto Workers.
Go UAW.
Michigan has become pretty Israel friendly under Rick Snyder. He’s a RINO but has been a solid friend of Israel and aided a lot of business between Michigan companies and Israel.
ð¥£â¬*,,!
For several months there have been struggles with encoding of pages/text on FR, with many browsers/users reporting the presence of those characters and/or standard US characters like apostrophies, quotation marks, etc. being replaced by ‘high ASCII’ characters.
Supposedly the server admins are on it.
They're everywhere, they're everywhere!
Even when you cut & paste from an FR Post which shows proper quotation marks, rather than "gibberish".
It appears that FR got a seriously defective update to their HTML software. Any IT geeks with an idea as to the cause?
Precisely what I said too!
Compared to the last governor of MI he looks like Attila the Hun.
Why the hell would even the left think that a bunch of blue-collar guys in an automobile plant would remotely want to boycott Israel?
I don't know why the show up but they do whenever an apostrophe or quotation marks are used. To avoid them you can Preview your post. It will show the gibberish. Delete the Gibberish and replace with the appropriate marks and it will post properly.
“student workers”
That explains it.
Sure, sometimes unions over-reach, and get greedy. But the average rank-and-file union guy is sensible, and not a leftie. He's not a Goldwater-type conservative, more likely he's a JFK-type conservative. Reagan was able to reach those guys. Trump seems to be doing the same thing now. There's a lesson there for the GOP.
Ford CEO Mark Fields is Jewish. The UAW Ford guys are a cut above IMHO, they know they are high cotton, I am sure the Union Reps and higher ups get it too. FWIW, Mulally’s “One Ford” plan was a modification of what Mark Fields gave him.
I guess I’ll keep my tiny bit of Ford stock.
After a lifetime of antipathy towards unions generally, and UAW in particular, I may need to reconsider...
Must be Obamabots.
After 7 years, they'll still be "working on it!"
“Why the hell would even the left think that a bunch of blue-collar guys in an automobile plant would remotely want to boycott Israel?”
Because the UAW is in bed with the Democratic party?
