Huge News in Des Moines Register Poll: Cruz Surges to First with 31%, Trump Follows with 21%

Is the tide turning against Donald Trump in Iowa? According to the latest Des Moines Register poll the answer is "yes."

The billionaire businessman and loose cannon extraordinaire has fallen to second place in the poll with 21 percent. He picked up 2 percentage points since the last poll, but is trailing Ted Cruz by 10 percentage points. The senator from Texas is now the favorite of 31 percent of Republican voters in Iowa.

There are two stories here. The first is that Trump has peaked in Iowa. The second story is Cruz's amazing surge. The senator is rapidly ascending; he has experienced a 21-point leap since the last DMR/Bloomberg poll. No other candidate in history has seen such a big surge in such a short amount of time.

The main reason for Cruz's rapid ascent is that evangelical and Tea Party conservatives are flocking to him. Jamie Johnson, an Iowa political operative, explains that there's another reason he's doing so well while Trump is stuck:

"Iowa's 11th commandment is thou shalt be nice. Donald Trump has violated this commandment one too many times. Now he is paying the price."

Considering how Trump talks about the Bible and Christianity in general, he probably doesn't even know the meaning of the word "commandment." It's not exactly shocking that he routinely violates one. Or two.

After the poll results were announced, Cruz took to Facebook to thank his supporters.

And The Donald? Well, let's just say he responded slightly less graciously:

This is par for the course with Trump. He's always criticizing everyone and everything unless they say he's in the lead. Then they're suddenly the best, most terrific and most reliable poll agencies or news outlets in the country. You'd laugh if it wasn't so incredibly sad.

I’m going to wait to see what other polls say. I find it very difficult to think that there’s been this big a swing. We’ll see.

Wasn’t Carson leading before? Trump seems to have stayed in 2nd place...while Cruz has replaced Carson as the favorite.

I don't believe the polls that have Trump at 50% or whatever the huge number is, either. These polls are all suspect. I suspect the margin is a lot closer than these polls suggest.

And those pollsters who have Rubio and Carson as competitive are delusional.

Only about the 6th or 7th thread posted on that Iowa poll.

Exactly. And it's a garbage poll by CNN being trumpeted (pardon the pun) by a left-wing rag of a newspaper. Ignore.

I live in Iowa. This is due to religious right wing nut case, Bruce Van der Platts directing all his followers to support Cruz. Due to this miserable pr*ck, Iowa chose Huckabee in 2008 and Santorum in 2012.

This will be interesting as Cruz is owned by the oil companies and is therefore opposed to corn ethanol. Trump supports ethanol.

Do Iowans want their economy to do well or do they choose to follow the bible beating BVP?

The OP is a 29 year old non-U.S. citizen quoting himself from his own European blog. Why do these non-Americans think they always have something to teach us about ourselves and are always so ready to inject themselves into our political commentary? Condescending patronizing little socialist snot. A Trump hater. Hey guys, please consider the source before you engage!

“Iowa’s 11th commandment is thou shalt be nice. Donald Trump has violated this commandment one too many times. Now he is paying the price.”
So relieved to read this. Was beginning to wonder though I figured if he lost me he would lose others. He whines more than bambi.

In recent days and weeks, Cruz has been endorsed by very influential conservative leaders in Iowa such as evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats and Congressman Steve King. When endorsing Cruz, the former said that "Ted Cruz has a titanium spine," adding that the senator "is a bold and courageous leader."

Considering Vander Plaats' influence in Iowa, it's very likely that his endorsement of Cruz will result in Cruz garnering even more support in the days and weeks leading up to the Iowa caucuses.

And that means that Ted Cruz has now officially become the favorite in Iowa.

The media can't ignore Ted any longer.

I think it's due to there being something wrong with the voters of Iowa. They've been drinking ethanol. Trump is ALWAYS right. The poll is biased. The dog ate my homework. The check is in the mail.

I wonder if Michael van der Galien is related to Bruce van der Platt? What the hell is with all these wooden-shoed Dutch boys getting into our primary fights?

if you want to believe that all of a sudden 1/3 of Trump’s followers left him in less than a week and went to Cruz then you go right ahead with that delusion
