Bush-backer Bob Dole hits Trump, Cruz (sleep in on election day if Cruz nominee)
The Hill ^ | December 8, 2015 | Jesse Byrnes

Former Republican presidential nominee Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) goes after GOP presidential candidates Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in a new interview. Dole told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell that Trump "says things over the top and people applaud. And he's insulted about everybody, every other candidate.

"And Cruz is so extreme," Dole, a backer of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's White House bid, continued in the interview, airing Tuesday afternoon on "Andrea Mitchell Reports."

"He's not a ... traditional Republican conservative," he added of Cruz. "Achievements are shutting down the government twice and calling the Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, a liar on the Senate floor."

Cruz has recently rocketed toward the top of the GOP pack in the early-voting state of Iowa, taking first place in a Monmouth poll and second in a CNN poll released this week. Trump has remained at or near the top of polls in the Hawkeye State for months.

Asked if he could support Cruz, should the Texas senator become the GOP nominee, Dole responded, "I might oversleep that day."

"He uses the word 'conservative' more than he ever uses the word 'Republican.' So, it would be difficult [to support him]," added Dole, who served in the House in the 1960s before moving to the Senate, where he served as majority leader. He was the 1996 GOP presidential nominee.

Dole told MSNBC that he remains hopeful Bush can eventually navigate his way to the top of the field despite lagging badly in polls.

"He is the tortoise in the race," Dole said. "[I] still think he'll make it."

> “I might oversleep that day.”

Much like every day of his own presidential campaign.

Yesterday Rush said:

.........”Cruz is coming on strong in Iowa right now. And yesterday I made this point. And I want to create the circumstance again. Let’s jump forward to February 2nd, you know, Hawkeye Cauci February 1. Let’s sit here and pretend Cruz wins it. Do you realize what February 2nd’s gonna be like? It’s gonna change everything. It’s gonna change media perception, Republican Party perception. It’s going to change everything. Right now everything’s just theoretical. Right now everything is just polling data. That’s all anything is, which is all the media cares about is the horse-race aspect of things.

The Trump thing frustrates ‘em ‘cause they’re not able to affect him one way or the other. If anything, they’re making him more popular. They would want to be able to destroy him. They can’t. The Washington establishment has been relying on the media to destroy Trump. They can’t. They’re frustrated as all get out. They focus on the horse race, the polls. Every time a new poll comes out, that’s the news, and it may as well be what the election’s gonna say that day, and they react to it as though that is the end result, when it isn’t. We don’t know what’s gonna happen on Hawkeye Cauci day.

But if Cruz actually wins that? He’s the last person a month ago that anybody gave a prayer of winning. Carson a month ago was leading it, and Trump was starting to fade in Iowa. By the way, there’s another poll out. The Monmouth poll yesterday had Cruz leading in Iowa. There’s another poll that came out last night that shows Trump leading in Iowa. I got it here. I don’t remember which specific poll it is. But just play the game. Cruz wins the Hawkeye Cauci. You can’t imagine the panic that is going to set in in the Drive-By Media and the Republican Party. You think they hate Trump?

One of the reasons why they are very worried about taking Trump out is that they fear it would lead to Cruz getting the nomination. And the Republican establishment is just apoplectic at that happening, because there, in Cruz, there is your thoroughbred conservative that nobody can outdebate, that nobody can outtalk, and they would be in utter panic. I would venture to say that the entire Washington establishment would much prefer Trump to Cruz.”......

You know....it’s interesting to go back over thirty years and realize the losers that the Republicans dumped upon us and how we simply endeared this period of stupidity.

Once a part of generational greatness and the warrior class, now gone soft. Thank God he and our Allied leaders of the past weren't mamsy pamsy’s when dealing with the Axis in WWII. I can imagine someone in ancient Rome saying the same thing before their fall.

Has Bob Dole had anything to say about the catastrophe that is Obama?

No...bashing Trump is easier....But Lets all remember that both Dole and Bush went up against a similar Foe in 1980...and lost. Notice the similarity of their messages in 2015, as it bears such an eerie resemblance to 1980. I remember; I was there.

The establishment lost then: the establishment will lose again.

Hi, I’m Bob Dole, you may know me from such movies as “Lewiniski Could Not Help Me” and “Long Night’s Journey into Night.”

An excellent question so I looked. Here is what I found at a site that says it is there to "give counterbalance" to the Tea Party:

Bob Dole: Obama Is A "Good Man," Cruz Is "So Extreme" And Trump is "Over The Top"

Bob Dole slams a senator because Cruz slammed a senator. These people need to be told to shut the hell up. They make fools of themselves every time they open their mouths.

When Dole and Clinton stood together and patted each other on the back for passing NAFTA I said “When those two agree it can’t be good for the rest of us.”

And by the way, Bob, I overslept the day you were wanting to be elected. How’d that feel?

Trump and Cruz are running pro America campaigns Bush is running a negative campaign. His family comes out of the woodwork bringing their loyalists. It is embarrassing to see one of our premier political families acting this way

It reminds me. GHW Bush ran a remarkably nasty primary campaign against Reagan so much so it was a surprise he got picked as vp. As I remember

Bush none of them or their peoe have said nothing about Reagan in the many years since

Now they’re dragging out Cheney and dole. Maybe they gave money to burn or some serious bettors who were counting on this race and won’t let go

But they need to give up soon. It is getting unseemly

Another feckless, f-ing, country-clubbing, Republican establishment oligarch drops the mask. Carter, Clinton and Obama didn't/don't bother them much, but Trump and Cruz sure are have them sniffing disdainfully and circling the Corrupt Bastards Club wagons.

To think that I used to give such nest-feathering sellouts credit when they went out and did "the right thing" in front of the cameras once every couple of years in order to placate the rubes.
